Dear Christy,
Various things come to mind and so here goes in a smattering of Hawick gibberish….
1 Ozzie matt ,you n i have a liking for the Free Derry musician Declan McLaughlin’s stuff and i am currently transfixed by his song Mary’s Eyes, not only is it movingly gorgeous but it brilliantly segways into Marley’s fine Wait In Vain.
I seem to recall one of your songs morphing into Eniskillen Dragoon but i may be wide of the goals there.
2 you recently posted about the programme on Rik Mayall and i wanted to say he was a genius. His name is tattooed on me in a long list of surnames of my Indellible Heroes. From Kevin Turvey to Alan B’stard he hit the spot, and my brothers and our pal at Goffs have a chat group devoted to him and python.
3 The shout out about Arthur McBride and the sergeant was a great one, whilst i don’t know of the short film that you referred to, i must have played the youtube video to the song 100 times when laid up a few years ago with an old men’s rugby injury. I went over then to see Paul Brady and Andy Irvine perform it as part of the anniversary tour of their big album in Derry’s Millenium forum.
That is enough scattergun but i also see the chat about Hilary’s army’s tour to Pat’s Germany ( ?!) Etc a decade ago, sounds good.
Keep on keeping on
Rory
Can it really be 10 years since the invasion of Europe….
We joined the hunt in Amsterdam and then Brian was our Mick Devine , chauffeur and tour guide en route to Antwerp.
Apart from the mighty gigs with yourself and Declan there are great recollections of eating outside near midnight with red blankets ( supplied by the pub/restaurant ) wrapped around us…… some of those blankets may have been deported to Ireland too.
Magic times… the Glory Days of the 4711…..
Christy's reply
I still remember the reception I recieved in Hamburg..the only time I ever recieved a standing ovation for simply walking out on stage..
gotta hand it to those German listeners…they know how to make a guy sing as passionately as he can.. and they respect longevity….
Orry, I’ve got a question. You might not remember.
When you wrote Yellow Furze Woman, the change at the end of the verse going into the chorus. Did it just appear? The thing changes colour completely at that point.
And how the mighty oak tree grows from a little seed
Massive colour change here
She had an everlasting notion.
Sorry, did you just hear it and there it was? Daft question?
Rebecca
Christy's reply
I have some memories from that song….
driving down a boreen in Longford I got the opening line
“I met a woman near the town where I was walking”
the song has always been about my Mother ,Neans De Paor ( Nancy Power) who came from Yellow Furze in the County of Meath
I heard a song from Tymon Dogg at the time which caused me to bring Chico Mendez in..a friend ,Fr Pat Clarke, was working in San Paolo with children living on the streets, all the references in the song were of things happening around me at the time…
I remember finishing it during a severe thunder and lightning storm in Canberra.. a fierce rattle of thunder had set of hundreds of car alarms
this life is “daft” the world is “daft”….we gotta get “daft” to try and understand it
Hello Christy,
The European gaggle sounds like the, best fun. Hilary, has anyone considered a return trip to ireland. It great to meet people online, but it would be amazing to meet in the real world. I’m trying to imagine a better adventure than chasing round Ireland with like minded souls, and I can’t. It sounds like the best thing ever.
I’ve been reading about Tiernan ManBrides family, his father Sean ManBrides, his grandfather John ManBride and his grandmother Maud Gonne and doing a bit of Internet wandering around Arthur mcbride.
It looks like there is one original field recording of it, sung by Alex Campbell here https://www.vwml.org/search?q=Arthur%20mcbride%20Alex%20campbell&is=1
Its a cylinder recording, very old and the quality isn’t good, but it’s there, all the same.
Just reading Hilary’s post, and not wanting to pry too much into the going’s on …..But was there a “ Continental Ceili” held during the Tour?
Best regards.
Hi All. This time ten years ago an international gaggle gathered for 6 gigs on mainland Europe for about 10 glorious days in Autumn sunshine. It was an extensive road trip around a tour that covered 3 countries, Germany, Holland and Belgium. As the tour started in Hamburg and included 2 other German venues Bochum and Niederhausen the German 4711ers assumed the role of honourary hosts and what gracious and generous hosts they were ? It is without doubt invidious to name people but at the moment these are the people I recall Adam ,Petra & Uwe , Maryline, Brian, Ruth , Juergen, Traudel & Horst and Evelyn & Klaus, Ger and Marty Mc Crudden, Martin Mc Fadden and Anuk. There were also some Luka fans including Rena. It was really wonderful to be on Full Tour with so many good friends, it was the Continental follow on from the gaggle in Lisdoon in 2010. The reception you received was unreal in these huge venues, from the very formal concert halls to really funky places. The sightseeing was impressive too and Adam displayed his usual orienteering skills in always finding the late night chipper !! I think I met Paul Mc Cormack with Woulfe in Carre, and the gig in the Roma in Antwerp was certainly different and funky !! All great memories and connections and musical moments as the never ending tour resumes once again. Never tire of the road for sure !! Beir bua agus beannacht. H
so many ironies of Johnson and co parading around central Manchester… it shouldn’t be forgotten that the site of Peterloo/the Free Trade Hall and Emmeline Pankhurst’s statue are right next to the site of the right wing plotting…
Time for some Guthrie and MacColl songs and a strong cuppa! D
Christy its hats off to Dominic Hutchins for confronting Mogg on the streets of Manchester. Hope this video goes viral.
I love a political song and today i must recount the words of Yellow Triangle….there was no one left to speak.
The political lyric matched to music is almost as powerful as Dominic’s bravery.
Regards
Rory

Thanks for posting this Rory…Dominic Hutchins gave Mogg a proper roasting…. I salute the courage of Dominic..
mention of Mogg reminds me of Tymon Dogg…
Thanks for the heads up on Vicky and Declan’s work…tasty playing and vocals – class is permanent… always good to see and bring back brilliant memories of many a gig.
Thankyou for pointing me towards Thomas Mccarthy. I watched his gig yesterday, well 40 minutes of it. I had to turn it off part way through and then the link wouldn’t work when I tried to go back in. His family had songs running through their veins, didn’t they. I loved listening to him talk and sing.
You mentioned a short film of Paul Brady’s Arthur Mcbride. I don’t think any one responded so, is this it? https://youtu.be/VBdywzKD2Jw
The soldiers uniforms are very peacocky. Red to distract from spilt blood, horrible. I am very sorry for the last.
There’s lots going on here. The old session at the beck in Brighouse is starting up again but different. Every third Monday night in the month will be a folk night. First one is on 18th October. Its just down the road from me. Folk music is alive and well in Brighouse.
Two people who aren’t my mum and dad have bought tickets to my gig on 14th October. I’m finding it ridiculously exciting that two people think that the best use for that 5 pounds is to hear me sing. I hope they turn up. I can sing to my mum and dad in my living room anytime they pop by.
Thanks again
Rebecca

This film was made independently by the late Tiernan McBride circa 40 years ago…. Tiernan was the son of Séan McBride who reiceved the Nobel Peace Award in 1974….
Paul Brady’s “Arthur McBride” stands the test of time
In troubled times, it’s heartening to read about an inspiring person.Until yesterday, I didn’t know about Mary Elmes from Co Cork…rectified via lots of online info, thankfully.
I’d recommend a few minutes’ reading for anyone, to find out about a woman with bravery and talents…her work is inspirational – in the Spanish Civil War and rescuing Jewish children during WW2.
Have a good day – almost Naas time!

Thanks for posting this ..I enjoyed seeing the chat with Fergus,,himself a great singer and stalwart of the Góilín Singers Club..
You mentioned earlier meeting Manus O’Riordan..it was particularly touching to see him filmed at the very beginning of the Sat night Concert….within 48 hours his life-long singing was done
Hi. It was exciting to be in NCH last night to hear Andy Irvine and his Dutch pal Jens unveil his Woody Gutherie project..CD due out in early 2022..he sure knows the music and history inside out. They gave a flawless performance that was very well received.. Roll on more live music..Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Thanks for posting….this is so beautiful…an outstanding example of ensemble playing…Liam Óg. Mark Knobfler, Sean Keane, Steve Cooney ,Art McGlynn and Liam Bradley all giving everything to the task at hand….each of them engrossed in their part to play..their expressions throughout and their musicianship utterly enthralling…a pure drop of the raw bar delivered with restraint and great musicianship….thank you
Hey Christy/all
I hope you, yours and all posters and visitors are doing well.
In case anyone missed it, William Shatner at ninety years old, has a new album out called “Bill”. It’s spoken word style over a band. Like his 2004 album “Has Been”, there are some great songs on it. If anyone wants to dip in, songs that I’d highly recommend from the new album are: Loneliness, Thunder and Fire, The Bridge, Masks.
Dear Christy,
Incandescent is the appropriate word.
You were right about the dripping red head on the stake to send to Liz.
Never thought i could detest a politician more than Thatcher ,but he is knocking on the door.
Boris Johnson tonight on the BBC “I’ve given you the most important metric which is, never mind life expectancy, never mind cancer outcomes, look at wage growth.”
He also could take tea with Pinochet and not bat an eyelid.
Time to play that track of yours again.
