Poor Vin Garbutt, it had escaped me that he passed away, only a few years ago. Another great ‘folkie’ gone. I see a biography just out.
RIP Vin Garbutt.

Hi Christy,
Autumn has arrived to the middle of Island, leaves changing to a beautiful array of colours, and the Branches laden with natures bounty of Berries.
Been listening again to “Joy of Living” the tribute to Ewan MacColl. What a wonderful legacy of songs he has left…… and so many of them covered and beautifully remastered by yourself.
Looking forward to the new album.
Best Regards,
Patsy

Great mention of folk singers and song writers here. C, I agree. Anyone, any of us who had the power to return in 50, even a century onwards, it’s McColl songs people may well be still singing in singsongs and the like. He has a huge canon of songs.
Vin Garbutt. He’s still performing. I came across a video, it was like an “ask the audience’. He wanted to perform a song about caving, yes, caving. The audience all said ‘no’ to his question, had anyone gone caving? So Vin had the suggestion that everyone go home that night and if they had an old wardrobe to step in and close the door. Cue: great laughter as our singer wanted to sing his caving song.
Christy's reply
Sadly Ed,Vin is no longer with us..I remember him playing at the Eston Folk Club when he was just a young lad..he stilled the night with a slow air on the tin whistle.. a decade later he was filling concert halls
Thanks for the Goilin update, Rebecca. Also. a reminder of ‘Canny Fettle’ who started playing in these parts many decades ago, despite having strong links to the North East…bits and pieces of their work online and at http://www.cannyfettle.com
Also, reminded of the ace MacColl song, ‘Cannily Cannily’ about the hardships of night train driving/effects on the family…classic Ewan MacColl writing. Lovely version by Tim Hart and Maddy Prior was the first time the song hit me.

MacColl….his songs forever resounding..
I believe that the hallmark of a great song is when it long outlives all memory of the writer…Ewan MacColl wrote so many songs that will always be sung…for as long as people sing
here in Ireland many people sing Ewan’s Songs with little or no knowledge of the man who wrote them

Hello Christy,
Fettle is a good word that you hear around here. It means something like good shape. So you could say, “she was in fine fettle”. Or ” I’m just giving it a good fettling”.
The main road up out of Brighouse is Halifax Road, known to locals as John King, .”I was just going up John King”.
The story goes that in the dim and distant past there was a fine archer who lived up Halifax Road. Many men would come and challenge him at archery. They put a sign with his name on and an arrow pointing up Halifax Road to help challengers find John King. Since then it’s always had that name round here. I learnt it from my grandmother.
Dave asked about the Goilin club. They’ve been pretty active on Facebook over the last few months and have a fine following there.
They posted a link to their grand concert a few days ago. https://fb.watch/8iP3G0lRys/
I hope this will take you there.

over 50 years ago I guested at the Folk Club in Stockton-On-Tees..the resident band were “The Teeside Fettlers”….their front singer was Ron Angel who along with his Wife Rita ran the Stockton Folk Club..The Fettlers were a top resident band so the club was always a lively one…. Rita and Ron were the best of hosts when I stayed with them….way back then their daughter gifted me two LPs by Doc Watson…I still have and cherish them….their club was part of a great circuit that included Redcar, Eston, Darlington and Middlesboro….Happy days…..Pete Betts, Vin Garbutt, John Taylor, Tony Foxworthy all part of that vibrant Teeside Folk Scene…
Saturday at NCH looks good… Andy Irvine and Rens van der Zalm playing Woody Guthrie music.
Interesting background info at http://www.nch,ie – Woody’s songs are greatly needed, for sure!
Have a good day

Hi C.. I met Manus at some gigs.. I think the last time was in Ballyconnell in May 2017. Such a soft spoken unassuming man. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. Once when I was in Alicante I read about the way they rounded up the men..and brought them to the harbour in their thousands for further transportation.. it seems many jumped into the harbour and drowned rather than face imprisonment and whatever else.. The horrors of war. When will we ever learn ? The songs keep their memories and struggles alive.. Beir bua agus beannacht. H

it was always a great pleasure to meet Manus…he will be sadly missed at gatherings of both songsters and Spainish Civil War memorials…like his Father before him he was a life long anti-Fascist… we must try and take up the slack created in his wake
Christy, a massive fan of yours Aidan McCormack was finally able to tie the knot to his beautiful wife Lucy Saturday just gone after 5 times of trying due to covid, it would mean all full lot to him if you could wish them a long and happy life together!
Dear Christy,
Its the way Pierce Turner sings ….i wandered across it yet again the fantabulous box set.
A Wexford lad i think?
He steps off the 747 etc
I think he is still going , and has a fine yet non-traditional version of his Wicklow Hills, covered by many.
He also wrote another you performed i think.
He seems to have ‘conquered’ america , quite a ‘chap’.
Stay dry

“she don’t have a stitch across her back

“She used to be a King from Davitt Street

Condolences to Manus O’Riordan’s family – what poignant tributes in his death notice.
I often check out the Goilin section on the ITMA site – what a great resource. Was there a broadcast about the singers today?
I spent a chunk of the afternoon listening to ‘Horslips’ from a 70s gig. What a unique sound – rocking out with trad tunes coming through here and there – it really took me back…
Hello Christy….. I’ve written a song that I’d like to send to you. Can I have your permission to do so Christy ? ….and if so, where can I email an mp3?

Just came by to say I enjoyed the Góilín chat.
The sound was great it was like you guys were in the sitting room just chatting , great gabháil fhoinn.!
These days due to social distancing , my year has been exiled to a convent across the road from the school. It has its advantages and disadvantages.
There is a particular time between classes when the teacher exits the building and we are awaiting the next teachers arrival .
I call it the twilight zone.
Anything can happen.
There is great excitement out of no supervision , they swing out of the lights on the ceiling ,jump on tables and chairs ,throw books, pens ,bags masks, hand gel, protractors, shoes, glasses, bottles , write on the clár ban.
Make human missiles out of smaller people and fling them as far as possible.
Get onto the roof ,try the fire escape ,summersalt down the hall ,run up the hall.
The works.
Then someone will shout that the teacher is coming and a true miracle occurs.
They all sit down quiet as lambs, twiddling their thumbs.

Our very own Christy , plain to be seen,
With a song and a chat with the gang of Góilín.

we had a lad in our class who was able to contort himself inside the piano before Mr Byrne arrived in to try and teach us maths….once or twice across the 40 minute class our contortionist would gently touch a string….poor Mr Byrne never twigged, was always puzzled ..
another time a young pup but some pebbles in Mr Byrne’s VW hub caps..we watched in glee as the poor man stopped his car ,got out and walked around the car scratching his head
when the Russians were sailing rockets to Cuba in the early 60s we were convinced that nuclear war was pending
Mr Byrne came into Maths class and some whipper snapper had written
“MOBILISE ALL VOLKSWAGONS”
on the blackboard…Mr Byrne was not even slightly amused..
Great listening to the Goilìn session.. all these great collectors, songsters, writers and poets the country has had over the years.. you couldn’t but marvel..it’s through your continuous mention and tales of the likes of John,Frank, the Grehans etc. that I’ve come to learn of their importance and magic..
