Hi Christy – linked to Rebecca’s post, you’ll know plenty about the wonders of Co Meath…
The above website has excellent info, county by county… As we know, Meath is rich in history and I feel fortunate to have had so many wonderful visits to several of the sites mentioned (fingers are firmly crossed, that I’ll return, to see family, friends and explore more of the areas riches…)
Hello Christy and All,
I’ve been thinking about time and how it’s used to control people. I mean the way we divide time into little chunks and allow chunks to be allocated to activities bt someone else.
Generally speaking, this can be a good thing, we all turn up at the gig together.
But, thinking about the media yesterday, got me onto it, as a control thing.
You know, most of us have to do things, we’re told to do at a certain time. It’s been going on a very long time. The names of the days of the week are pretty useless if they’re not combined with others controlling our behaviour.
The thing that got me onto this was looking at pictures of the stones in cairn T in County Meath (there are better names for this monument I think but I don’t know them). The sun at the spring and, autumn equinoxes enters the cairn’s chamber over a cill stone and onto a keystone. They are both carved with patterns. Prominent is an 8 spoked wheel, or it could look like an eight petalled flower on the keystone.
Imagine if we still divided our years into 8, based on how the earth and sun behaved in relation to farming crops.
We’d most likely never get to gigs, but most of the control over us would disappear too.
A thought like this runs and runs.
I came on to prattle about politics and music…saw CS’s post…loss beats everything else. Sorry, hadn’t picked up on the sad news – thoughts and condolences from here .
I would like to make a post here to thank all the 4711ers that got in touch and came to the wake, rosary and mass at the house since the very sudden passing of mine and Roisins dad .
Ye all helped sail him on to the mystic room in Áras Bán na Flathasa.
This is a beautiful supportive community.
I Just want ye to know the messages all came to this house in many different ways ..texts,cards, calls , visits ect are greatly appreciated. CS 16
Yeah , I was a little vague with my post.
It was the non prosecution of the bloody Sunday soldiers that set me off but also remembering the Birmingham Six , the Guildford Four , Guiseppi , the Maguires …. all of whom suffered British justice/injustice.
And still the families in Derry and Ballymurphey …..
Spot on Christy, or in the words (rightly or wrongly) attributed to Edmund Burk. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”
I think I’m by myself here but I had to comment on Marty’s post. I had to go and find out what it was about. This makes me feel ashamed. I couldn’t find anything in the new about it here I think the media keeps us in the dark in the UK. We seem to be spoon-fed what they want us to know about. As I write this I’m thinking, who’s they? We should all be part of the same thing.
So Marty said British justice. I think it’s British injustice. What a whitewash.
no need to feel ashamed…the world is full of injustice both factual and percieved..all we can do is chip away, do whatever little that we can…all we can do is be aware of whats happening around us …take note and respond if its within our power to do so..
I assumed Marty’s post was referring to the subject of the song below…(those who became known as “The Birmingham 6”
Scapegoats
E. Cowan/C. Moore
Hugh Callaghan, Paddy Hill, Gerry Hunter, Johnny Walker,
Billy Power, Dick McIlkenny that’s their names.
Five men playing poker on the Heysham train
Fate was dealing them a cruel hand
Hugh Callaghan walked home through the evening rain
Not knowing what lay in store for him
There’s traces of nitro on cigarettes and matches
On Formica tabletops and on decks of playing cards
When forensics found traces on the hands of these six men,
The police drove up from Birmingham
Hoping the case was closed
Have you ever seen the mug shots that were taken
After 48 hours in custody
Battered and bruised, haunted looks upon their faces
The judge accepted they confessed willingly
Please take another look at what you see
If you tell me my family are being terrorised
Keep me awake for six days and nights confused and terrified
In the lonely dark of night I will swear that black is white
If you’ll just let me lay down and close my eyes
Ill sign anything if you let me close my eyes
Scales of justice balance up your act
Am I talking to myself or to the wall?
Hugh Callaghan, Paddy Hill, Gerry Hunter, Johnny Walker,
Billy Power, Dick McIlkenny scapegoats all
I’ve recorded The Parting Glass https://youtu.be/f4tuvBds-BE
It took me 8 goes to get this version. I hope you like it, aways daunting to post myself here, no idea why, everyone is lovely.
I’ve been listening a lot to the goilin recording of Lord Baker on itma. I’m hoping some of it has rubbed off.
I’m in Leeds Eating breakfast in an actual cafe. It feels like being on holiday.
Following recent chats about the song ‘My son,John’ and variations,I’ve just found another…it’s on youtube, with a really good film – powerful version of ‘My son, Tim’ by John Francis Flynn from a new album, apparently. Info says he’s Dublin based and there are also good clips from ‘It Ain’t no Disco’ (which seems like a treasure trove of talent).
As so often, I’m likely ‘late to the party’ about Mr Flynn’s success, but thought I’d share the info here and hope that there are a few more youtube hits – the tradition rolls on with another variation of a fine song.
Hello Christy,
Kevin Barry? I’m gobsmacked. No wonder you can sing pretty much anything, your training started very young. No wonder you remember things so easily. Do you remember what you thought about it?
I can’t remember my first song. It would have been around the same time in my life but had nothing like the impact. It was probably something like
Incey wincey spider (most likely with actions).
Anyone else remember their first song?
Kevin Barry
In Mountjoy jail one Monday morning
High upon the gallows tree,
Kevin Barry gave his young life
For the cause of liberty.
But a lad of eighteen summers,
Still there’s no one can deny,
As he walked to death that morning,
He proudly held his head on high.
Just before he faced the hangman,
In his dreary prison cell,
The Black and Tans tortured Barry,
Just because he wouldn’t tell.
The names of his brave comrades,
And other things they wished to know.
“Turn informer and we’ll free you”
Kevin Barry answered, “no”.
“Shoot me like a soldier.
Do not hang me like a dog,
For I fought to free old Ireland
On that still September morn.
“All around the little bakery
Where we fought them hand to hand,
Shoot me like a brave soldier,
For I fought for Ireland.”
“Kevin Barry, do not leave us,
On the scaffold you must die!”
Cried his broken-hearted mother
As she bade her son good-bye.
Kevin turned to her in silence
Saying, “Mother, do not weep,
For it’s all for dear old Ireland
And it’s all for freedom’s sake.”
Calmly standing to attention
While he bade his last farewell
To his broken hearted mother
Whose grief no one can tell.
For the cause he proudly cherished
This sad parting had to be
Then to death walked softly smiling
That old Ireland might be free.
Another martyr for old Ireland;
Another murder for the crown,
Whose brutal laws to crush the Irish,
Could not keep their spirit down.
Lads like Barry are no cowards.
From the foe they will not fly.
Lads like Barry will free Ireland,
For her sake they’ll live and die.

Christy's reply
The version I sang as a boy did not include verses 3 and 4
you ask what did I think when I first sang it….
I cannot remember…
but I do remember when I first sang it on stage at a local concert
all polished up in my shirt and tie as my boy soprano notes flew out into the hall
I found the experience emotional in a mysterious way..that emotion still lingers, almost 70 years on..
it came back to me in Killarney last Sat night when I sang “Veronica”

The first pic here shows the pattern clearly on the cill stone.

We do some good things sometimes though. The person in charge of developing the astra zeneca vaccine was given a massive standing ovation the other day at Wimbledon. I’m in awe of her. What a woman!
