Ed – I was about 25 miles west of Athlone when we heard about the moon walk (just read it was 6pm there, so we must confuse later walks with first). I was five and happy as Larry I was allowed to help out on Carty’s farm. Whith us looking at Earth’s moon and Uncle Joe saying, “They’re a long way from home”, New York didn’t seem so far away. I may only imagine I remember Joni on Cavett while Woodstock was happening, but I don’t think so (chatted briefly with Dick a couple of times). I probably knew her voice from your radio and was pleased to see her on tv, she being pretty and gentle. And doesn’t perspire at rate of a certain Irish folkie, I’ll tell you. Is it the salt in the bread, bacon n puddins? Global warming? We wore sweaters in August there then, but it’s water wicking fabric now for some of us. About all I wear.
You’re set for a great day, Christy. It sounds like an idyllic Monday with a fine bunch of companeros.,, if any techies have chance to take any photos, it would be a treat to see them on the gallery, please…The inner geek in me is missing the set up and sights of gig world, so it would be a great buzz to see what’s going on in your recording area, if poss.
Thanks and all good wishes to you/all involved with making the mojo happen…

gonna see if I can reactivate the Gallery on this site…thanks for the nudge
Hello Christy and All,
That serpent sounds fab! I’d love to have seen the show and the concerts. Some of the best times in my life have been playing percussion for shows. I played kit for Oh What a Lovely War. Horrible show but a great time.
I was yet to see the light of morning in 1969. I asked my mum what it was like to live in the 60s. She said it was an optimistic time.
Great space diversions here now…awhile back, I looked on RTE archives re the 1969 moon landing – there’s a good piece about the coverage (a lot more info than can be found about the ‘holy grail’ Planxty/Finn McCool music from Edinburgh – let’s hope the musicians can access that).
BBC tv covered the moon landing live – keeping studio chat going throughout the night, as the mission was delayed. Pink Floyd played ‘Moonhead’ – a lovely, ethereal one off piece,I battled sleep to peer at the grainy footage as Armstrong made history… then a few hours kip and school. Quite recently, I regaled my young Grandaughter with the details of my first hand take on the ‘giant leap’ night… she wasn’t very impressed, merely asking, ‘Why didn’t you watch it on catch up’?…
Have a good week.
Dave

all I remember is being in Scotland…drinking a lot…bemused at all the fuss..leave them at it….
Seamie O’Dowd has joined us to lay some overdubs on the basic tracks recorded so far…..he arrived in last night fully equipped with a van load of instruments… we had a lovely warm up….last recorded with Seamie on the Magic Nights album…. we sat in last night and played for two hours, the Atkin lightly upon my lap. Jimmy Higgins to my left, Seamie O’Dowd to my right….Davy Meade at the desk, Johnny Meade keeping us all under observation, Paddy Doherty steering the ship….
down to business today..we’ll roll out the tracks, Seamie will sprinkle the twinkles
A You Tube clip titled ‘The frost is all over’ features that same lineup, it’s the same gig, Planxty ‘mark 3’ as you term it. Johnny Moynihan sings in it. The bodhran sounds too heavy, a fault on the mixing desk.
Great to read about the making of those two albums. C, you could become a future poet laureate!
Rebecah, so your harp is on order, January 2020 it being ordered. I’d visions of some poor postman on his bike with a harp in the front basket, he wouldn’t be able to see where he was going and he’d crash land along with your harp.
Christy's reply
The Bodhrán sound was shite..the playing not a whole lot better…back then Johnny sang two songs in our set…. “P Stands for Paddy” and “The `Frost is all over” he also played Bouzouki, Fiddle and Whistle…..he wrote a beautiful Polka called “The £42 Cheque” which featured on the third Planxty album
Moon landing July ’69. Whether RTE showed the first landing live, I dont know and I dont think so. First one was about 6 o’clock in the morning Irish time. But I recall a few other moon landings being covered live on TV, we watched one in school.
Hello Christy Moore et al,
With regard to astronauts stepping off – was landing televised over RTE? Try as I did, my tired 5 year old self couldn’t stay awake after another long day gleaning spuds. Classmates would recall event and be shocked I was slept through. “It was 6:30 in the evening!” “Not where they were, or us.” says me. I worried more about them getting home, anyway. Our charter flight flew over Hudson River on return, and we had a look at line of cars on Tappan Zee Bridge and the upstate thruway. That was story for days and I remember Joni on Dick Cavett show, wishing she was there. I didn’t know her songs, yet.
Christy's reply
In 1969,I was interested in any sound or sight of Joni Mitchell….all that moon palavar was outside my little world
Christy, I’ve always been intrigued by Planxty’s Finn McCool adventures in Edinburgh since first I heard about it 40 or so years ago. There’s very little on t’interweb about it. Andy Irvine also says great things about it on the biograpgy page of his site. So would it be possible to tell us a bit more about the music, was it dance music with any songs, was any of it ever played live at gigs afterwards? There’s a lot of people out there would pay good money to hear a recording of it Im sure!
Christy's reply
My memories of that time vary from clear to cloudy…..we arrived into the rehearsal room three weeks before the show kicked of in the Haymarket….we began to assemble and arrange music to fit the narrative, we got to know the cast and crew extremely well and many friendships were formed….there were 6 performances a week and each Sunday we played a Planxty Concert in the venue…
the set was dramatic and was in the form of a huge serpent……1,000 people came every night…the main stage was in the serpents mouth and the band were situated on a platform high up in the serpents tail…
The concerts featured the music from Finn MacCool interspersed with Planxty repertoire…the concerts were recorded but we’ve never been allowed to hear them…something which Andy and I deeply regret
Here’s the Rambles of Kitty with lovely Liam O’Flynn and Planxty, complete with Christy with lots of hair and some very cool jeans. https://youtu.be/itjz1kNFeq8
And the bodhran with a tipper. I’ve not heard you play with a tipper before. Totally different noise.
Kitty’s Rambles made me think of Liam too, I could hear the crans in my head.
I think the remastered albums are great. It’s allowed me to get hold of them on vinyl as a first time fan. I have a big Chinese trunk that’s filling up nicely with LPs. I like all four of those albums. Love exploring all the music.
Yes, I’ve got a new harp on order. Thank you for listening to my video Ed. The new harp is going to be a beauty from Scotland made from Yew wood with 34 lovely heavy strings. I can’t wait to play it and it s been forever that I’ve been waiting. I ordered it in January 2019. Its going to have its own flight case so I can travel with it and keep it safe. Mark Norris is the maker. His harps are glorious.

Never saw this before, have no recollection nor awareness of its existance…. painful to behold with the bloody Bodhrán far too dominant in the mix….this was Planxty mark 3…Donal had departed and was replaced by Johnny Moynihan..when I decided to depart Paul Brady joined the band…we played as a 5 piece during that cross-over period….most memorably we joined the ensemble of “The Fantastical Feats of Finn McCool” …written by Sean McCarthy and directed by Kenny Ireland. This extravaganza ran for 4 weeks at the Edinburgh International Festival..we hung out in Auld Reekie for 6 glorious weeks in 1973. I clearly recall some of the Music we arranged for that show…..it has not been heard for 48 years ..it was recorded by our sound engineer but we have never had the pleasure of hearing it…..

The duo of albums, ‘Velvet’ and ‘Live in Dublin’, both stand the test of time.
Rory when the contract to paint the Forth Bridge comes up you could apply, you could be playing the ‘On the Road album, job would be done in double-quick time.
Christy, Elon Musk will mark you off his guest list; so no ticket for a moon flight. Then again, maybe a first Christy gig on the moon…….

Cooling off after a busy day (nowhere near as hard work as Rory!) – followed up your tip about the jig ‘ Kitty’s Rambles’. A lovely tune, found on youtube – then a huge bonus as ‘ the rambles of Kitty’ showed up, played by Messrs Og O’Flynn and Paddy Glackin – a real treat, as is anything involving Liam.
I hope you’ve had a good week – great that there’s a gig in the diary.
Jings Christy it has been sunny again this afternoon,
So i turned off the dictaphone and picked up the paintbrush again ( i am sure this fence is the same length as the Forth Road Bridge).
However today i was just after topping up the baldy tan, the redness of last week gave way to a decidedly latin scottish tan.
Anyway i decided the roar of the crowd should accompany my fine singing. So there i was with the OnTheRoad album blaring, more paint on the slabs than on the fence and song after song belted out.
What a brilliant album for audience participation, how i love it’s sound.
Set off brilliantly by the crowd really ‘digging’ Ordinary Man, just a fantastic disc ,thank you and the gig crowds very very much.

This Day in Irish History
This day 33 years ago – 12 June 1988 – Ireland beat England 1-0 in the Neckarstadion, Stuttgart.
It was the first time the team had reached a major international tournament, the UEFA European Football Championship
The winning goal was scored by Ray Houghton in the sixth minute.
