Hello Christy,
Your president is some guy. You are clearly better at choosing than we are. I have a lovely book called The President’s Cat that I bought last time I was in Ennis.
Thinking of books, has anyone been reading 32 Words for Field. It’s as much about culture as language, really great.
Thankyou for the info Hilary on the Liffey Bank Sessions. What a dream team! I found a little more info here https://journalofmusic.com/radar/christy-moore-concerts-and-more
There is a video there but it won’t work for me.
What are Fairy tunes please?
Peter O’Mahoney is a popular guy. Steve says he wishes he played for Saracens.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
I doubt if Peter could ever be prised away from Munster…
Our President and First Lady have always been passionate supporters of all forms of Artistic endeavour……
Hi Christy, apologies for posting again so soon, but i decided to do some digging into JOE COOLEY and sonny mullins after the speech project inspired me.
cooleycollinstradfest produced a marvellous video of Joe and his brother in a wee set, people of all ages (and all hair styles) crammed in and even hanging out of windows to watch a set that had the room rocking and seems to have been performed just weeks before he died. What a gem, did you ever hear them play? Well done gerry diver for keeping the flame alive.

Rory

Joe Cooley’s music has inspired generations of Accordeon players….there’s never a night passes but,in some corner of the Universe, Cooley’s music reverberates
and thanks to Hilary for posting the fine words by President Higgins. How heartening – here, the clip should be beamed onto Parliament,by the superb ‘Led By Donkeys’ gang (no website, but their thought provoking satire can be seen on twitter @By Donkeys).
I looked for the ‘Liffey Bank Sessions’ on youtube, but drew a blank – But I did find some gems from Liverpool Phil’s ‘Irish Sea Sessions’,so they’ll be rocking the bunker soon…
Enjoy the day

I may have an audio file of one session…I’ll have a gander but dont hold your breath !
Good morning Christy,
Thoughts of you in Vicar Street, and Hilary’s sharing of Michael D ,got me wondering of how your various companaeros ‘on the road’ are faring….with some irreverant thought.
Is Paddy ‘on the road’ touring around never more than 5 miles from his home looking for hedgerows, church halls and halting sites where his genius for organising gigs and crews can be put to use?
Is Declan now sending penpal letters to Lady-ship Camilla daily, putting together another fine solo album to match I Love the Noise it Makes, as despite having the look of a Father Christmas covid means there are no jobs for lookalikes in Penneys this year?
Is Jimmy hawking his wares round the Galway hinterland as a specialist who services and sharpens saw blades whilst tapping out a tune simultaneously on a bohdran?
And what of the maestro Cathal, has he taken to scowering the open ditches of Down royal amd Downpatrick races to find stray horses tails to fashion bows to whack out some Edinburgh sets?
You will need to hire out Croke Park for the return gig in 2021 given the anticipation of us masses for the stars aligning and you all returning together.
Stay well
Rory
Hi All, me again, with the talk and clips of harp playing here recently I went looking back on that night in July 2012 when as part of the Liffey Bank Sessions you shared a stage with Laoise Kelly, Christy. I thought Rebecca might be interested in the setlist as well as some jigs by Brendan Ring, some Fairy tunes, melodies from Thomas Moore, ye played Yellow Furze Woman, the Song of Wandering Aonhgus, Back Home in Derry and Honda 50 !! and then Liam Og came on !! Those were 3 Magic Monday nights in the Summer of 2012 organised by Conor Byrne in that intimate Dublin venue,,, beir bua agus beannacht go deo. H
Christy's reply
I loved those “Liffey Bank Sessions”….. Conor Byrne has a great ear when it comes to curating Music Gatherings….his “County Sessions” was another enjoyable series…his work continues with Festivals in Doolin, Donegal and a variety of other gatherings…. (a fine musician himself,Conor is my Nephew)
Hi All. A segment of the Late Late Show on Irish TV last night paid tribute to Sharon Shannon, it featured many musicians including Donal Lunny. Our esteemed poet President Michael D was fulsome in his praise of musicians, folk and trad heads in particular, for their role in society and their plight since March, well worth a listen, https://twitter.com/i/status/1335124407828836353 beir bua agus beannacht go deo. Thanks H for posting President Michael’s words of support….he has always kept an ear out for the raw bar
Well Christy,
Your lads did the business, skelping the Scots, it may not have been pretty but pretty never won a rugby game.
I wish we had a Peter O’Mahony, what a man, nae frills but tough as they come, tougher even than Lawless, Morrissey and the Russian sailor combined .
Cheers

Peter has been to a number of gigs….I still recall meeting himself and Donnaca O’Callaghan after a gig in Cork….like standing between twin peaks
Hello Christy,
Vicar Street sounds like a great evening. I can’t wait to hear more about it and hear the two of you. I so wish we could be there.
I hope this isn’t a stupid question but do you know if recordings are mastered differently for different formats? I’ve been listening to Magic Nights and On the Road on vinyl. I can hear different things to when I listen to the mp3s. Is it me making things up?
I’m thinking the Topic sounds lovely and I need to have a try.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
its a valid question…I dont have a precise answer….but I can say that a recording will sound different on Vinyl,Cassette,CD,Download, …..add in the different listening devices and there is the potential for a huge variation in audio…..
Morning Christy,
I have been playing the wonderful Gerry Diver’s ‘Speech Project’ this morning. The recording , to sympathetic music, of Margaret Barry’s recounting of the passing of her mother is a remarkable piece.
I must have listened to it dozens of times but for whatever reason it was piercingly clear today, thankfully my mum seems to be slowly recovering here, but Margaret was not so lucky and and when she was young too.
I must dig out my couple of Margaret’s cd’s today. She was clearly a rare talent, oh to have spent an hour in her company. I feel very grateful that i was pointed in the direction of Gerry Diver’s album.
Stay safe

Vicar Street sounds brilliant – a great set list and welcome chance to reconnect with companeros I’m missing a lot of people and places too, but there’ll be great reunions for all asap.
Been meaning to do this for ages and glad I finally checked youtube for some Mike Harding songs. When I first saw him (and you) in early 70s folk clubs, he rightly had a reputation for his Northern humour as much as his knowledge of folk song.
Based on the loss of his father in the RAF,during WW2,he wrote ‘Bombers’ Moon’,also, a pair of wonderful WW1 songs – ‘Accrington Pals’ and ‘Christmas 1914’ (both with excellent visuals on youtube) I’d forgotten that Mike is such a fine singer and hope that companeros here might (re)discover some wonderful songs.
Really looking forward to Vicar Street news – and am putting Google translate to work with the Gaelic vocabulary…

Thanks for posting the set list – it has led me to a great session of flashbacks and memories – a brilliant escape from a wet, gloomy Friday… like Patsy,I’m heading to do some research. I’ve passed through Skryne a time or two. It’s certainly verdant, but I didn’t know it had a song!
I wonder (time permitting)if you might fancy doing an occasional trawl through your diaries and posting some info about the era you pick/song lists etc… it’s always fascinating to get your take on episodes from your gigs.travels…great,if possible.
I just hit youtube for ‘1960s folk clubs’ and saw a Liverpool gem – The Spinners/Jacqui and Bridie in a packed room – ace stuff from the black and white era…also, found an online reference to The Topic folk club,Bradford – going since 1956 and moving with Covid times – no website, but a link emerges if you Google the name – you’re listed in the index! Also, Facebook and online sessions – so,Rebecca ,maybe another date in your virtual tour?!
Thanks for the music. Keep warm and dry, all.

definitely played two of those clubs Dave..Jacqui & Bridie’s and The Spinners….not so sure about The Topic, every time I went to Bradford thing got a bit hazy…if I did play The Topic I’m sure I was well treated for it had the reputation of being a very good club
Thanks Christy…..Some set list;;;i will have to go searching for one or two of them …stretch my listening some more.
