Pat Kenny interview, Newstalk, Pat jokingly said only for a bank strike you could have wound up a bank manager in Athy(!) I remembered there and then, you said you had an ancestor a bank manager, and he had Athlone connections.
So he hadnt worked here as a bank manager. Mohill and Newbridge; ok.
Yourself and Dave on Downdaradio evidentally knew each other. It sounded eavesdropping on two friends.
Christy's reply
Yes Ed… for many years both Davie and myself have been travellin the road between Ballad Lounge and Concert Hall…. our paths have criss-crossed over the years..he’d be a good few years younger then myself but we share the same love of song….
I’m thinkin of Athlone now, as a boy I used to stay there with my God-Father, and I used to visit a big house by the River…went to to Pictures there in a Cinema by the Bridge where, many years later, I played with Planxty…I’m thinking of The Dean Crow, of O’Brien’s in IrishTown,of The Shamrock Lodge, of Flagons down my the River, of Peter Molloys…
back in the Old World
Always good to see Pogues/Shane stories – and good that you’re not changing your version of the best ever Christmas song!
Came across lovely music earlier – Incredible String Band’s ‘October Song’ (and Martin Simpson take)- a perfect stable mate for ‘January Man’…
Last but not least, the piece I did on my Grandad (and drawings he made)in WW1 has now been published. I’m really pleased with the way the designers have set the info and would be very happy to share an email version with anyone interested. Easily sorted via d_g_burrows@hotmail.com
Keep well

Hi Christy
I read in the comments that someone had missed seeing the Pogues live me to But i did catch Shane live at Liverpool university in 97. He came on an hour late absolutely smashed sang two songs said all students are scumbags wacked one over the head with a mic stand and then got dragged of the stage and arrested. It all happened in the space of about 10 minutes What a gig i love that man.
As often these days, sleep barely arrives despite the efforts of John O’ Dreams, but the words echoed last night ,as before i tried to find the land of nod i read from the first autobiography by Frederick Douglass, entitled ‘An American Slave’.
Remembering that John O’ Dreams should come to the ‘slave and the freeman’, Frederick was an escaped American Slave, an orator extraordinaire.
In 1846 he spoke ,on a tour of here and Ireland, at the small Green Kirk in Hawick.
I very nearly have the final approval with an application to the council to put up a plaque of commemoration on the site he spoke at here, i hope his legacy can be valued by all. Both a slave and a freeman, his early life was a torture as it was for millions such as him, he sleeps today but his words and deeds live on.
Regards
Rory
Ps i take great heart in our ‘group’ ,thanks to all ‘players’ for their contributions and of course the ever willing conductor.

Hi All. Mention was made in previous posts about the singer Lisa O Neill, she won an award for Best Original Folk Track for ‘Rock the Machine’ in the Irish Folk Awards in 2019 and was nominated for four BBC Folk Awards also in 2019. Tonight she features on RTE TV 1 in The Works Presents at 23.20. BTW the 2020 RTE Radio Irish Folk Awards will be broadcast on Thurs on 26th Nov at 8 pm, always a great night, usually in Vicar St but alas,,!! Beir bua beannacht go deo. H

Christy, I had the pleasure hearing Shane in Páirc na bhFál (Falls Park) many moons ago during the West Belfast Festival. He brought the house down.Rainy Night in Soho is simply gorgeous. What a wordsmith. Nice one John…six long months I spent in Dublin…six long months doing nothing at all – sounds about right these days no matter where you live. Lovely singing and harp playing Rebecca, such a beautiful instrument. Your new album is on the list. Go well!

they leapt on his pipes, bellows, chanters and all

and that put an end to Lanigan’s Ball”
You’re after reminding me of an outdoor gig in Casement Park.
The stage was rigged up in The Stand.
The listeners thronged upon the pitch.
There was a Flute and Drum Band over from Glasgow.
The Heavens opened with a Summer shower.
Afterwards I played in the Greenane Lodge
Hi Christy,
just been out for a socially distanced walk (to check my eye sight) when I met a fella walking towards me on a narrow single pass path. As we approached each other ‘I stepped out, he stepped in again, he stepped out and I stepped in again, I stepped out and he stepped in again’. Anyway to cut a long story short I got his number and were meeting up again next week, could be the start of a bromance.
Christy's reply

Listen to Traveller for the 1st time last night, blew me away… Still ‘Fresh’ even though it was back in 99′. Amazing!!!
P.s – is anyone else still waiting for their delivery of ‘Early Years’ ???
All the best Christy and all.
Stay safe!!! Long convid not recommended… Bryan.

I never saw The Pogues, despite loving their spirit.
Whilst waiting for your set (followed by Dylan)at the 2011, Finsbury Park Feis/Fleadh, I checked out the venue’s large marquee – just in time for Shane and a rock ‘n’ roll band .The place was packed and musical ass was kicked- loud, raw and buzzing.I didn’t know many songs, but was absorbed by performers and audience – then ‘Rainy Night in Soho’ – hairs on the neck tingling -brilliant. Out into the daylight to grab a place for the epic set from you and Declan – ‘Black is the colour’ and the crowd singing, that evening, one of many stand out moments, from your gigs. D

I’ll be back soon, re: working in the bank.
Ok, months. And that doesn’t sound long either. Yorkshire is in my bones, but it’s been a while.
From here, 6 weeks in Dublin sound pretty good, and not long at all.
As often these days, sleep barely arrives despite the efforts of John O’ Dreams, but the words echoed last night ,as before i tried to find the land of nod i read from the first autobiography by Frederick Douglass, entitled ‘An American Slave’.

Thinking about Shane. He often reminds me of that quote fro The Life of Brian.
He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.
All the better for it and I’m not sure how I’d tell the difference.
Aplolgies if I offend anyone. I am very sorry.
