I came by to wish you happy saint Patrick’s day CM 74 I hope you are well…
The oddest saint Patrick day of my life.
My dadó used to knickname the priest a glàsóg shráide.Because he reminded him of that bird , the way he jumps around the altar.
So this morning from isolation I watched the glasóg jump around on a live mass web stream.
I was greatly distracted by a container of highly flammable hand sanitizer gel .He had placed it rather close to a candle on the alter.I watched him light the candle.I think Saint Patrick protected him for the duration of the mass..
There he was praying for people all over the world completely unaware of the danger right under his nose . God knows what happened after he turned off the camera.
So because of various health issues I have been in isolation for over 2 weeks already now.
It came as such a relief when I saw things being cancelled and different sections of communities coming on board.I began to feel a little safer.
Hopefully it wont go on too long though.
I feel some world leaders , Borris and Trump in particular are like the unicorns believing they can swim playing out in the rain .( people at Cheltenham and in the pubs included).
While the rest of us are all on board the ark.I much rather be on the ark.I’d say she was a grand boat.

You have reminded me of a few things…I used to be an altar boy from 1954 to 1957….I served under triúr Glasóg Shráide….one of ’em a bit of a tyrant…there were different tasks… principally lighting and quenching candles,ringing the consecration bell, holding the patten at communion, swinging the thurible at benediction and other services..funerals,christenings and weddings…..the tyrant struck me hard across the face after one 7am weekday mass claiming I’d not poured the wine into the chalice correctly…(i’ve always reckoned he had a bad hangover the same morning)…when I arrived home my father asked what was wrong….he paid the curate a visit….
Cheltenham really sticks in my craw…I think we should start a campaign…Send Willie Mullins to Wuhan, maybe Sir Antony and Ruby might ride with him…I’ve always had a grá for the sport of Jump Racing….my respect for that community has been undermined….
Keith Duggan wrote a great piece in the Sport Section of last Saturdays Irish Times, the heading read

as for the lads and lassies going crazy in the pubs…I used to be that cowboy…way back in the day….scary to see people being so removed from whats happening around them…

the F was hard to pin down, I got it eventually..albeit incorrectly…I’ve never managed to correct that wrong which has limited my left hand for 60 years now….my basic few chords are all mis-shapen, some of them limited to 5 strings..
( between lesson one and lesson two I inadvertently tuned my bass string up to F and there it has remained since 1960….shite & onions !)
On The Ball !! after Hamburg/Frankfurt/Amsterdam/Brussels we sailed for London on May 22nd 2007.Met and spoke with Kirsty Young at BBC House on May 23rd. Great team of women running the Desert Island Discs programme. I was asked to sing “Stitch in Time” and was happy to oblige despite the fact that it was not on my list.
Were I doing D.I.D. now,I’m sure I’d have a different set of songs. Its a wonderful institution, one that still delivers delightful programmes after 50 years. A bit like our own “Bowman” and “Sunday Miscellany”..

Hi Christy…hope you and your clan are keeping your heads well below this bad virus stuff, it’s a trying time for civilization, I’m hoping a little bit of humour, and a little bit of song will see us through, either way , I hope for everyone s sake we at last learn a lesson out of this, the confusing thing is I’m not sure what the lesson is..what ever it is it will go far beyond washing your hands every five minutes. like yourself I had gigs I had to cancell, sarcafices I have to make, now and in the coming months.. but like your self I will spend that time dreaming up new songs, get down the forward and backwards rolls of the five string, and carry on ..I wish you well my friend, slan

Hey Christy, hope your keeping well ! It’s been a helluva week all round but we’re all happy and healthy enough here. I had plans for a mighty trip straddling two weekends squeezing in Mayo, Glasgow and Edinburgh but the wheels are of course grinding to halt for now. Time to hunker down and weather the storm. New York has instructed us to shut down our bars and restaurants (and I don’t disagree) ironically at 9am on Saint Patricks Day, we probably won’t do much before 9am….We had the wonderful Roy Buckley from Cork booked in for a night on our little stage but he is on the way back to Cork tonight. He has you in his sights to do one of his Song Collector Podcasts and maybe during the downtime you might consider it. Here in Belgium people are a bit crazy sometimes! Panic takes over despite good information from our gouvernement.
Normally we have tickets for Edinburgh and Glasgow in april, but we will see what happens. Most important is to keep good health.

Great that Lankum are able to keep on keepin’ on-also excellent to think of your jamming with them on ‘Green Grows The Laurel’…the version on ‘Lily’ draws me back again and again…the power of the song,linked to your delivery,makes for a mighty mix.
As swathes of the world’s population are in lock down,its no surprise that singing/music is a common link for comfort…cellist Yo-Yo Ma has posted some stunning pieces and the images of Italians singing (resonating around apartment blocks) are good for the soul..doubtless,there’ll be many more for us to share…
So far,life is fairly normal here,but there’s a sense of worry about what will/might hit…meantime,I’ve got home jobs lined up-instruments to play/vinyl /CDs to sort…and a load of books on a ‘to read’ pile…but what might boost Guestbookers most,might be another Christy competition?!!

I’m here this morning pondering “Have I recovered from the trauma of the last competition ?”….I think we had 3 such bits of diversion…Adam of Arklow may have won the last one if I recall correctly..there was another one about the songs chosen for “Desert Island Discs”
Hopefully the panic will recede…when we are scared we sometimes react fearfully, we are coping here Thanks Be but I imagine it would be very different were we living in difficult circumstance….young parents on the breadline with young children to feed and care for, wages threatened, panic and fear dominating living quarters…
Folk tale on the Yellow disc to hear the wonderful wild chorus of birds accompanying you , is where i headed after reading your reply Christy.

There was an Aids Alliance Auction in The Mansion House, Dublin circa 1990…..we gained a framed copy of Paula Meehan’s “Folk Tale”…it was hanging on the wall by the stairs where I saw it each day…it began to take shape and a simple melody began to emerge…
the version on the box set was recorded with Nigel Rolfe at his home in Passage,Co Waterford..it was just after dawn and the Birds were waking..a Creamery lorry trundled up the hill…
I first worked with Nigel for his album “Lament” (on the Real World Label in 1992)… he asked me to sing “Danny Boy”…
wW also worked together on his lyric “The Ostrich” (aka “Everybody Knew, Nobody Said” aka “Anne Lovett”) also on his “Tiles and Slabs” ( his Lyric about the 1994 murders of Imelda Riney, her Son and the local priest Liam Walsh) also on his lament for Rory Gallagher “Rory is Gone”.

Hope your staying safe and healthy in the midst of all this craziness. I had the opportunity to take couple of my kids to see Lankum at a local club a couple of nights ago. Due to the current situation, there were only about 30 people there to listen. They could not have been more gracious. Their music seemed to match perfectly with the current mood. However, in between songs they were very light-hearted and funny. Great evening! Hopefully we can all use this forced solitude to do something productive. Stay safe!

On this day in 1991 the scapegoats were released after 17 years spent innocently in prison…battered and bruised, haunted looks upon their faces, the judge accepted they confessed willingly….
Shane also had the song ‘streets of sorrow’, let us not forget , as we all concentrate on other problems.
The only silver lining just now is the chance to listen to more music.

I have written a song and when writing it I thought of you as the type of singer to do it justice. I’m sure you get many of these types of emails. I have it recorded on a basic audio file. Its about 1916 and the aftermath. I haven’t a title yet.The lyrics are:

Did you hear of the boys up in Dublin, They’ve taken the GPO,
they’re striking a blow for freedom, against a formidable foe,
on an ester Monday morning in the year of 1916,
Irishmen and Irishwomen, fought once again for the green.

Many said that they were foolish, others that they were insane,
that they couldn’t beat the English, their efforts would all be in vain,
blamed for destroying the city, for the death and destruction all round,
that they should get their comeuppance, for daring to take on the crown.

Hats off for your decision!!! It’s a real shame how long for example football officials here in Germany took their time before postponing football matches. Even this morning they claimed to play at the weekend and only stop next week. As one manager was suspicious of covid19 today (proved wrong luckily in the end) and public pressure e.g. by many football fans they finally decided to postpone this weekend’s matches only late this afternoon (first match would have been at 8.30p.m.)…And then they dared to talk about losing money – at least they’ve shown their real faces – while people are dying all around. So in my opinion your decision deserves respect! Although your music helps me and many others in difficult times recordings will have to do for quite while. Stay healthy for many Magic Nights to come after Covid-19!

Congrats on making the right decision today, and well ahead of “officialdom”.

Hope your staying safe and healthy in the midst of all this craziness. I had the opportunity to take couple of my kids to see Lankum at a local club a couple of nights ago. Due to the current situation, there were only about 30 people there to listen. They could not have been more gracious. Their music seemed to match perfectly with the current mood. However, in between songs they were very light-hearted and funny. Great evening! Hopefully we can all use this forced solitude to do something productive. Stay safe!

On this day in 1991 the scapegoats were released after 17 years spent innocently in prison…battered and bruised, haunted looks upon their faces, the judge accepted they confessed willingly….
Shane also had the song ‘streets of sorrow’, let us not forget , as we all concentrate on other problems.
The only silver lining just now is the chance to listen to more music.

In my earlier post when I said that you would be the type of singer for such a song I meant that your style, interpretation, delivery and passion would knock the best out of it. When I was bashing it out I was imagining (and singing) it in Christy Moore gusto. Maybe tis rubbish. Anyway enough waffle from me. Thanks again.
it certainly is not rubbish to my eye Michael…Its a good old style ballad written in the style of the old balladmakers…I have a number of new works on the desk here at the moment and wont be able to attempt it.. but thanks again for sharing
I have written a song and when writing it I thought of you as the type of singer to do it justice. I’m sure you get many of these types of emails. I have it recorded on a basic audio file. Its about 1916 and the aftermath. I haven’t a title yet.The lyrics are:
1.
Did you hear of the boys up in Dublin, They’ve taken the GPO,
they’re striking a blow for freedom, against a formidable foe,
on an ester Monday morning in the year of 1916,
Irishmen and Irishwomen, fought once again for the green.
2.
Many said that they were foolish, others that they were insane,
that they couldn’t beat the English, their efforts would all be in vain,
blamed for destroying the city, for the death and destruction all round,
that they should get their comeuppance, for daring to take on the crown.
3.
Sent to their deaths in the morning, shot sitting if they could not stand,
each day as these men were dying, reborn was the soul of Ireland,
there was no more condemnation, or talk of romantic fools,
just the march of a nation, to end Britannia rules.

To break the chains of our bondage, and the ropes in which we were bound,

Hats off for your decision!!! It’s a real shame how long for example football officials here in Germany took their time before postponing football matches. Even this morning they claimed to play at the weekend and only stop next week. As one manager was suspicious of covid19 today (proved wrong luckily in the end) and public pressure e.g. by many football fans they finally decided to postpone this weekend’s matches only late this afternoon (first match would have been at 8.30p.m.)…And then they dared to talk about losing money – at least they’ve shown their real faces – while people are dying all around. So in my opinion your decision deserves respect! Although your music helps me and many others in difficult times recordings will have to do for quite while. Stay healthy for many Magic Nights to come after Covid-19!
