Dear Christy, Magic Nights have arrived in Germany and give us much delight. The sound of the new album is amazing and the choice of songs superb. So many beautiful and quiet songs, wonderful instrumental accompaniment, Vickie’s gentle singing – a perfect live album. With one exception: Spancilhill is one of my favourite songs, and I had been looking forward to listening. Then a bit of disappointment: I could have done without hearing the raucous Barrowland choir particularly on this gem … Maybe Joxer or Lisdoonvarna would have been more suitable songs for Barrowland contribution … But besides that it’s a wonderful contemplative album, one of your best in my opinion. Also, Uwe and I were lucky to watch your Late Late Show appearance on RTE here from Hamburg – fair play to you! Good luck for the Vicar Street concerts – we won’t be there but we are confident and hopeful to see you next year somewhere on the road in Ireland. Take care, Petra
Christy's reply
Variety is the spice of Life Petra…we both hear “Spancilhill”from a different perspective…I was very interested to read your equally valid response….
I ‘ve had a long relationship with this beautiful song…..I started singing it in 1964 when I was 19…this Barrowland version stands out for me because of the audience…I just love the way the “Barrowland Choir” join in…I love the sound of the exiled Clare Woman shouting “Up The Banner” …..simultaneously appropriate and inappropriate…. I like the way the song breaks down slightly betimes…the Banjo outro falters , the audience handclap is difficult, yet I like it in a strange way….the fact that Michael Considine was only 19 when he wrote this song back in the 1850s adds another layer…he emigrated at 15 to California and died at 23..
Thank you for sharing the depth of your listening…..
Hi Christy,
Myself and my husband Mick Geraghty will be home in Ireland for Christmas
Mick is from Newbridge orginally and I am from Naas so two proud Lily Whites.
We are going to your gig in Vicar Street on Monday 16th December the day after we arrive back to Ireland.
We are both huge fans and your music can often be heard playing from our house here in New Zealand.
Would be so grateful if you could play the Voyage on the night we go to Vicar Street. Its our song,
Kind Regards,
Una Downey
Christy's reply
Safe Journey Home for You and Mick…..many years ago I played a gig in New Zealand….afterwards I met John Geraghty back stage….I remember it very clearly..John and I were in National School together and it was such a lovely surprise to meet him again on the other side of the world…your post has me wondering might Mick be related to John…..used to meet another Michael Geraghty in Melbourne…he hailed from Roseberry,Newbridge and was an outstanding Gaelic and Rugby player….back then I had many friends abroad in Nás na Rí….used to cycle over to meet up with one of them….later went to dances in “Mrs Lawlor’s” Ballroom and later again drank the most beautiful creamy pints of Black Porter in Tom Fletcher’s drinks Emporium….always a pleasure to hear from neighbours in Exile…
Before hearing a note of ‘Magic Nights’,I’d been aware of a real buzz of anticipation…and appetite wetted by the awestruck ,but not sycophantic, tone of the RTE radio piece…as I put CD1 into the car stereo,I deliberately hadn’t looked at the track listing,so the sounds washed over…both discs have now been on repeat for several days and many miles…the whole album is wonderful…
As I mentioned after the Bridgewater gig, you’ve never sung better than in these times…thankfully, everything is recorded perfectly too…so many wonderful songs (a few new ones,to me)and getting lost in music is a welcome way to be.
Huge respect to the musical companeros too…a delicate brush stroke here and there, then making a tune fly…Yesterday,I pulled the car over and jacked up the volume for ‘Well Below the Valley;…you’re a hell of a bodhran player-and it gets the essence of a song/music.A timeless combo of voice and drum…it also took me back to early Planxty and the first time I saw you play…telling friends the next day, that its special to hear an artist get inside a song like you had…thankfully,I’m still saying the same…
Fair play and long may you keep on keepin’ on…
Dave
Christy's reply
Dave,
Thanks for taking the time to listen and send feedback…”Magic Nights” has been a rewarding process….David and Jimmy did most of the heavy lifting…all the other elements came together thru the participation of many…having performed the songs all I had to do was tend to the flock and make occasional decisions…
now its time to move on…..the next batch beckons…a fresh approach perhaps, some new sounds to keep an old dog’s tail wagging…
songs have begun to emerge, ideas beginning to form….may Time spare us all
Morning Christy,
The magical Magic Nights aside i have been fascinated by the pink disc recently.
It got me thinking about the song 1945. As time winds on and down ,and i suppose we all wind down to zero, i wondered if you ever thought of extending the song on, forward, from where you left it?
I assume it is an autobiographical song ,and whilst the sheep are still grazing beside Johnny Murtagh and Mr Weld’s strings, there may be a few more verses to add? I imagine that ,since it was written, so much water must have passed under the bridge, down the culvert, over the salmon ladder and on towards the sea.
Have a great time in vicar street….as if i need to tell you to !
Regards
Rory
Christy's reply
Good Man Rory…..Your visits here always welcome….your mention of those two trainers reminds me of earlier times… of Mickey Rogers, Brud Featherstonhaugh, Darky Prendergast, Con Collins…of the Jockeys of old, Gerry Cooney, Liam Ward,Billy Burke,JImmy Eddery……great days out on The Curragh, Baldoyle,The Phoenix Park (a tricky course)…
1945 feels complete to me…I have tricked around it once or twice but always arrived back at the original form…it is an auto biog that will prob remain unfinished…allow me to thank you for your welcome suggestion….I have a few new ones on the desk at the mo…..soon as Magic Nights left the gates I found myself seeking new diversions…fresh furlongs
How are ya Christy,
On the 9th of December 4 young lads (from Cork and Louth) who have seen you an accumulated 23 times will be going to vicar street with 3 girlfriends who have seen you an accumulated 0 times!!
We have one single friend with us called Sean… He’s been tindering and texting and sexting but to no avail…. We reckon Liadoonvarna or a trip Amsterdam are his only hope at this stage (3 months single!)… If you could please play either song for him we would be much obliged.. he’s getting desperate at this stage!!
Ride on Christy and keep doing what you are doing!
Do chara,
Denis
Christy's reply
Dinny Boy, you might consider allowing Nature take its course….in considering your request I have discussed it with my propriety consultant….She advises that it would entirely inapropriate for me to intervene on such a delicate and personal matter. Last year in Barrowland, Jock McTavish asked me to sing “Black is The Colour of My True Love’s Hair” for his German fiancee Gudrun Schleisinsanger ….She, being a natural blond, took terrible offence and battered him to unconsciouness with her Bratwurst.
Perhaps you and your “paired-off” amigos might end up jealous of Sean’s status…imagine your discomfort if your three “girlfriends” detest the sight of a 74 year old sweating Ballad Singer…they could be Daniel or Nathan fans or even closet devotees of those who swing….they could leave for the ladies during the gig and never be seen again…..Sean would be the winner in that situation…
You might consider “First Dates”….I have a good connection with that series and might be able to ease Sean’s passage onto the list of Runners &Riders…
The Catholic Church also run a dating agency in their Knock Bureau and. according to all accounts, have achieved some remarkable results….only last week I sang at the wedding of a “spoiled”priest to a Transylvanian sword swallower. Their romance kindled by the thoughtful and erudite committee at thon bureau…
Other options might include “Moores Almanac”, Lisdoon in September or a visit to Panti Bliss’s Emporium in Capel Street….
I hope U7 have a great night in Vicar Street ….should I sing either or both, rest assured I’ll be thinking of Sean and wishing you all the very best
Hi Christy , hope all is well. Its been a pleasure listening to magic nights this last week. it is a fantastic album purchased the 4 cd set the booklet looks well as well as the vynal, so many highlights, Matty, Tuam beat, Tippin it up to nancy, so many fav songs on this record. the production of this album is very good, sound is excellent you can hear everything so clearly your voice as well all the backing vocals and instruments esp the bodhran. i was curious the inchicore wake, was this recorded at vicar street in 2016 at the sound check, i remember this was the year i took the group photo and remember hearing a song i hadn’t heard before. Adam
Christy's reply
Far as I can remember (I’m still in bed ) it was recorded before the Sound Check in Vicar…..the crew set up the stage so as we were in a circle facing each other and we made a few passes at Pete St John’s classic……once we were done the lads reconfigured the stage and we did our soundcheck
hoping to repeat the process next week and maybe get a version of “Clock to Zero”
Your pictures are a great addition to “Magic Nights”…Keep up the good work
Well Christy, huge fan… myself and a few lads have gone to see you in Vicar street the last 2 years and we couldn’t recommend it enough!! We’re going to see you again this Tuesday, 10th December. I’m not sure if you do requests but it’d make our night if you could play Joxer for one of the lads… he calls himself the BLT (“Big Lad Treacy”). Thanks a mil Christy, you’re a legend!
Keep her lit,
Shane
Christy's reply
gonna put BLT into the raffle…..I am fortunate enough to recieve multiple requests for call outs…they goes into a raffle and three gets pult for every gig….at 3 I’m maxed out…more then that and it becomes a major pain in the hole for me and the 99.9% who dont seek call-outs…. rest assured Shane…if we play Joxer the night ye are in …I’ll be thinking of You & BLT as I steer the Bedford off the Ferry in Hamburg
Hi Christy,
Got an early Christmas present from children of tickets for Vicar St Monday night next (Dec 9th) really looking forward to it, it’s being a while. I would love to hear Morecambe Bay if it was Possible

Magic Nights is beautiful, loving every minute of it…earphones on, tea and listen away…thank you and all involved for this great album.
If any readers are interested, tonight I host a 21 year celebration radio show for Sin é radio programme with Mick and Kk. We have a heap of guests including Wally Page and Johnny Mulhearn, Johnny Duhan, Eddie Sherlock, Francie Conway and lots more…its the longest running Irish folk and ballad radio show anywhere. Christy, big fan. Myself and a few of the lads headed down to Charleville last Friday for your gig (first time seeing you live), we were a bit over excited and worried that we set our expectations too high but yourself and the lads absolutely blew us away.. got to hear all our favorite songs… Sail on Jimmy, Beeswing, Viva La Quinta, Amsterdam and The Cliffs of Dooneen for the encore to top it all off. Booked tickets for the birthday for The Glor in June on the way home.. Looking forward to it. Legend

I recall feeling the same way when myself and Turlough McGowan went to hear The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem in The Olympia,Dublin in the early 60s…on the way up we visited Eddie Marum’s and Tom Fletchers in Naas, The Red Cow nr The Long Mile Road and The Black Lion in Inchicore…..we had a large Taylor Keith Bottle with Rum & Blackcurrent to sustain us for the duration. We heard, Johnston’s Motor Car, Jug of Punch, Leaving of Liverpool,Brennan on The Moor, Rosin The Bow, The Barnyards of Delgaty,Whiskey You’re the Devil,The Bard of Armagh..it was a night that changed my life and we hit a wall nr The Bundle of Sticks on the way home..I bought my first Guitar at a Fleadh Ceol in Portalington the following Sunday (£3 from Ned Bulfin) and I’ve been banging it out ever since..
“They hackled them both hands and feet
with twines they could not break
and brought them down to Killaloe
by steamer on the lake
without Clergy,Judge or Jury
on the Bridge they shot them down
and their Blood flowed with The Shannon,
convenient to the Town”
I learned this song from Mrs Murphy of Tulla
who,as a yound girl, attended the Funerals of:
“Young McMahon and Rogers, Brave Egan and Kildea”
I ordered Magic Nights from Amazon (US) hoping to give as a Christmas present and Amazon says will be delivered between January 1-February 1. Disappointed. Can’t wait to hear it, though!
Thanks very much for two memorable nights of music and song in Charlaville last night and on Thursday. From the minute you and the lads set foot on the stage the room light up for the next two hours.A great atmosphere on both nights.Roll on Vicar Street and 2220 for more Magic Nights.Have a great Christmas you and all The Crew.
Christy's reply
Morra Dave…theres gotta be somethin in the water in Northwest Cork…we were fairly leppin it Boy…you were in fine fettle yourself, full forward both nights
I’m sitting here in Sydney listening to all the auld favourites and thinking of home. This will be my first Christmas away from home since I left Ireland 6 years ago but your music softens the blow – singin’ the same old songs!
This also means it’s the first in as many years I won’t be there with my Dad to see yourself and Dec at Vicar St. My family will be there though on Monday 16th, table 17, right up the front.
While I’d love them to hear the likes of Smoke and Strong Whiskey and The Contender, I think city of Chicago would be the most fitting – I would be massively grateful if you could play it for them so they know I’m there in spirit. I know it would resonate with many others in the crowd too.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas – you’ll have earned the rest after the four nights at Vicar Street!
All the best for 2020.

John,
Enjoy the Summertime up there in Oz….its wet, windy, dark and wintery here but,as you know,we are well used to it down here in Bognia….

Please let me hear “aisling” while im there, if i cant see the pouges any moore, play his song for me ❤

I do love that song Aisling……
Hi Christy
Just listening to the new album package Magic Nights On The Road.
Knowing all the songs, I am delighted at the sound quality, choice of songs and audience participation at different venues.
Congratulations to all performers and to all involved – a wonderful legacy.
Been privileged to see you at all of your Barrowlands gigs over last 25 years and look forward to seeing you all again in April.
I wish you health and happiness for as long as possible.
Slainte

Christy's reply
Hard to beat The Barrowland Choir when it comes to audience participation…greetings to Paisley..back in the 60s, the late Danny Kyle ran a great Folk Club there…he was a wonderful host and Compere…Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty, Hamish Imlach often played there as I did myself 50 years ago
Great reading the feedback here about the latest release. I see you mention a song ‘the Lass of Aughrim”, itself immortalised in Joyce’s great short story ‘The Dead’, though not far away from here one might some day go and investigate the historical centre there, I thinks it opens only during the tourist season.
Meanwhile: Nic Jones, a chap here I met, he thinks he played in Athlone in ‘1978’.
Christy's reply
“The Dead” remains one of my favourite films….so many memorable moments ….not least Frank’s beautiful rendering of that song from the landing on the stairs….the soliloquoy for poor Michael Furey gets me every time….Donal McCann at the top of his game….I can watch that Film time and again….
the thought strikes me…. Nic Jones and Donal McCann, two of a kind
HURRAY!!! Eventually received my MAGIC NIGHTS this afternoon (it’s a long way from Dublin to our German town).
After a first listen I only can say AWESOME!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to you, dear Christy, and all the people involved!
Enjoy your time in Co. Cork,
Traudel
Christy's reply
North Cork could not have been better….great venue, the management and staff at Charleville Park did all they could to make the gigs successful….Crew and Band warmly welcomed and accomodated…..this is not always the case…..(recently in Gorey Co. Wexford ,the Hotel Manager displayed nothing but distaste for Band, Crew and our Audience. We’ll not bother him again !!)
Among last nights audience was Declan’s one year old Son who gurgled with excitement at his Grandad’s wonderful playing…it was a great night

Hi Christy looking forward to seeing your gig tonight in charleville. Birthday treat from the family today. !!
the Band hit the stage running last night..the four of us had a good time…hope you had a good Birthday treat
Cork,
Traudel
North Cork could not have been better….great venue, the management and staff at Charleville Park did all they could to make the gigs successful….Crew and Band warmly welcomed and accomodated…..this is not always the case…..(recently in Gorey Co. Wexford ,the Hotel Manager displayed nothing but distaste for Band, Crew and our Audience. We’ll not bother him again !!)
Among last nights audience was Declan’s one year old Son who gurgled with excitement at his Grandad’s wonderful playing…it was a great night
