Everybody needs a break….. so we headed for Carlingford for a couple of nights. … found the pub with the live music…. dunno if you believe in coincidence but the singers here last night included the same David Rovics mentioned in the previous post from Derry. … he did indeed sing the song of the Hawker Hunter story and the mighty Scottish workers…. he also sang a great song of the International Brigades called I think… the Last Lincoln Veteran ….. it’s on YouTube I think but I’m not great at the old links and stuff. This David Rovics chap is one he’ll of a protest singer.

There is an excellent documentary on bbc iplayer at the moment called Nae Pasaran ! It’s about a group of Scottish Workers that refused to repair Hawker Hunter jet engines while the coup was ongoing in Chile. For anyone that’s interested David Rovics wrote a song about the workers exploits called ‘East Kilbride’ that is well worth checking out on youtube as well.
Did you ever embrace “WhatsApp” at all it’s a great app to pass on tunes. No restrictions on size of files , unlike email.

I experience extreme difficulty when attempting to utilise any function on thon devices…total headwreck ensues…for personal sanity I need to keep it simple…on the one hand I pay a small price but,on the other hand, I still have time to gaze out the window and watch the leaves fall…..
occasionally I feel envy at the dexterity and universality of smart users but I see the downsides too……
I might look at that App you suggest but I’m more likely to pick up the box and sing a verse of “The Verdant Braes Of Skryne.”..or “The Unquiet Grave” or “The Night Before Larry was Stretched”

Thanks for the story about you and Dominic. Alcohol can certainly be a great creator or destroyer of relationships, for good or ill in either case. I remember enjoying the bit in Liam’s book about visiting Dominic and the Behans in Dublin wherein much singing and whiskey ensued.
I’ve been incorporating “Yellow Triangle” into my set list as of late, it seems unfortunately appropriate for our current era in America.
Looking so forward to Vicar Street, I’ve seen the Planxty reunion video and it looks like a grand yet cozy place. We will be checking out Matt Molloy’s in Westport, the Crane in Galway. If you kno of any other good music happenings or locations, I’d be happy to explore.

Seeing the fabulous news of Margaret Barry’s induction and ,of course, last year John Reilly being inducted into the Hall of Fame it made me ponder on why we take until people are long gone, before full recognition is properly given to Travellers and their music. In fact we have all been travellers at one time in our ancient ,or more recent,history.
John Reilly is commemorated wonderfully in John Spillane’s album ‘the man who came in’ and by Damien Dempsey on ‘keeper of the flame’ so
my next trip to the gig in Trim will let me detour to visit Boyle to find the spirit of John Reilly.
Anyway it reminded me of the old scots’ song ‘Bogie’s bonnie belle’, so am away to murder it in the car on the way up, after a spin of the ‘bonny green tree’ in the train, and maybe a blast of Wexford’s other musical son Pecker Dunne….
Am thoroughly enjoying the ‘old fashioned’ feel recently of the Edinburgh set style tunes ,and Irish Ways and Irish Laws…

RTE TV are screening the Awards for an hour tonight…dont know if you can access that in Suffagrette City….
Had a stormer last night in Armagh….”where nature has lavished its bounty, in the orchard of Erin’s green land”…..the Armaghdians turned out in wonderful profusion, in high fashion and in great style….they travelled from far and near…John Donegan came from Tallahassee to hear “The Boy from Tamlaghtduff” …..Traudel and Horst came from High Germany to hear “The First Time Ever I saw Your Face”….The “Honda 50” got a spin out too and then, from nowhere, came “Irish Ways,Irish Laws” which stilled the night….
Cathal Hayden’s Family came from Pomeroy. I had a great chat with his Father afterwards,we spke about songs and tunes, about music and players, Fleadh Ceois and Festivals…. John is a pure music man, it was a joy for us to sit with him and his family and share some precious time…
Then we drove across thru Newry, over Hilltown and on down into Newcastle in County Down where later today we will tog out in Slieve Donard, we’ll tune the Guitars,resin the Bows and tighten the drums one more time….
what a priviledged existence we enjoy, getting to play music we love to thousands of people who love to listen..
I had a grand chat with my Old Buddy Ralph McTell at the Awards Gig the other night.We reflected upon our priviledged working lives….We first met in a Manchester Folk Club back in 1967….Ralph was riding the rods with “The Streets of London”, I was getting my foot in the door…we struck up a friendship that has continued ever since….and he sounds as good as ever….still doin some “Hard Travellin”

Big Folk Music night in Dublin last night at 2nd RTE Folk Awards…..Peggy Seeger travelled to Ireland to present a posthumous “Hall of Fame” award to the grandchildren of Maggie Barry* …..President O’Higgins presented Moya Brennan (Clannad) with the Lifetime Achievement Award, (we are priviledged to have such an enlightened President and First Woman in this era of deeply flawed World Leaders)…..the wonderful “Ye Vagabonds” swept the boards with 3 awards….my good Buddy Ralph McTell flew in to present an award and sang beautifully…lots of performances from a great array of players….stand out for us was “A Lazarus Soul” who played a track from their new album…we’re going to hear them next week….so many new Bands, singers and sounds on the Folk Scene both here and over there…..
Keep singing and playing Dave, Keep listening and communicating too…

Travelling north-west we listened to a RTE programme, they mentioned Ewan McColl’s 30th anniversary yesterday and played a great version of “Dirty Old Town” sang by Luke Kelly in remembrance of the wonderful singer/songwriter. I thought of you and wished you would sing “The Travelling People” or maybe “The First Time Ever” in one of your next gigs gigs at the weekend.

I’ve been trying to work on Lagan Love these last few days. Starting to feel like I might be getting somewhere with it. The freedom of the melody and ornaments is very new to me. A whole new world. Fiddling round on the piano is helping.

My mother born in Tipp Town as Irish as can be
She left a gift of Irish genes she left that gift to me.
A coal boat was her passage a child not yet two
From a mother lost to TB to a father she hardly knew
From Henry Street to Merseyside a child of poverty
She always remembered her Irish roots they now live on in me.
I was born on Merseyside England’s Green and
pleasant land-
But something grew inside of me it’s hard to understand
The green shirts of the sporting teams I supported without doubt
Plastic Paddy you can call me but never count me out
Accentless and English born it may not be apparent to you
But with passport, Blarney and green eyes I’m Irish through and through.

My mother born in Tipp Town as Irish as can be
She left a gift of Irish genes she left that gift to me.
A coal boat was her passage a child not yet two
From a mother lost to TB to a father she hardly knew
From Henry Street to Merseyside a child of poverty
She always remembered her Irish roots they now live on in me.
I was born on Merseyside England’s Green and
pleasant land-
But something grew inside of me it’s hard to understand
The green shirts of the sporting teams I supported without doubt
Plastic Paddy you can call me but never count me out
Accentless and English born it may not be apparent to you
But with passport, Blarney and green eyes I’m Irish through and through.
There are two types of people look and you can see
There’s the Irish and those who Irish wish that they could be.
I’ll leave you with a notion I’m sorry if I bore
An Irish man I will be and I’ll sing like Christy Moore.
