Hi Christy. Hope all is good. Was having a root through old memorabilia today and came across an old poster from @1985 from a night in the Firgrove Mitchelstown. I must have taken as a souvenir. £5 on the doors and support by the Kay Twins! I tried to copy on here but can not do. I was a lad of 18 years young. Remember it like yesterday. You blew a fuse….. literally. Lights went out but you soon got back in action. It was a great night, made all the better by you singing Back Home in Derry that I had requested. Seen you many times since, The Opera House, big tent, Siamsa, Finsbury Park and Guildford. All great gigs. I play a bit myself… favorites are Back Home, Ordinary Man, Black is, Ride On and in process of learning The Time Has Come. Such a poignant tune. Remember the times well. As a young teen touched by the tragedy unfolding. Terrible times indeed. I’ve a song that I wrote about 1916. If you’d like a listen let me know. I could email to you. No worries if you’ve enough to be doing. Did yer sound man ever give you my song about the great hunger that I gave him in Guildford @25 years ago?! Also sorry for nearly taking your eye out at Finsbury park with the same song in a envelope in another life time! 😉
Christy's reply
Clem…you’re bringing me back there…Mitchelstown always meant a visit to Liam Browne on the square…I rem playing in The Firgrove too..think they used to run Sun Night gigs there…I loved those Finsbury Park Fleadhs that Vince Power put on…glad to read that your own playing is going well…we need Ballad singers to keep the Island awake for whatever lies ahead…
Don’t recall you playing the Amharclann in Gweedore but you did play Ionad Cois Locha at the very foot of Mt Errigal (Dunlewey ) a few years back ….. then again I might have missed it.
Christy's reply
You are spot on Marty…I’m getting my Amharclanns confused with my Ionads…Donegal is such a vast County, Bundoran is only the start of it,ramble on up to Dungloe,Gortahork,Dunfanaghy,Carndonagh, Moville and you’d know all about blisters on you heels….my first visit was 1957 when I was 12 and we were all shipped up to Gortahork for a seachtain of the teanga….thats where I first encountered The News of The World..the Bean-an-Tí had it delivered by fear-an phoist ( wrapped in páipéir Dún gach Dé Déardaoín) from Glasgow….I can still recall the excitement it engendered among the students…a far cry from The Leinster Leader
Plenty of top class music in the hills this last weekend. …. four men and a dog headlined the Johnny Doherty festival in Ardara in the Nesbitt Arms hotel …. a mighty gig in a town full of music.
Then last night we ventured west to see Altan in a great little theatre venue in Gweedore. .. maybe @ 200 to 300 tiered theatre seating …. perfect setting and a fantastic show.
With the icing on the cake to come next Fri and Sat night in Bundoran … it couldn’t get much better …..
Christy's reply
I enjoy reading mention of “Four Men and a Dog”…I first met them in Finland many years ago when we shared an Irish Music Festival that was staged by the legendary Olli Pellika…I’ve enjoyed their joyful style of Music ever since. In recent years I’ve had the pleasure of playing with their Fiddle (& Banjo) Player Cathal Hayden.
Good too to remember the Music of Johnny Doherty.I never encountered Johnny but I’ve heard many recordings and I’ve seen film footage of his playing. His music lives on in the distinctive playing of many Donegal Fiddle players.
If memory serves,I think I played in that Theatre in Gweedore. I recall meeting Manus Lunny and his family after a Concert there maybe 10 years back.
Getting ready here for a much anticipated return to “beautiful” Bundoran. Its a great Gig room in The Great Northern Hotel… listeners come from all sides. I find it very difficult to remember (or accept) the proximity of “border” when playing in the “border” regions….this cursed invisible line, drawn on long since discarded paper by some lout of a lewdermawn…some twat of a pumped up, arrogant Johnson Rees-Mogg with neither knowledge of our culture nor interest in our country…and they’re still at it…still using our Island as a pawn in their jingle-jangle, egotistical, bare-faced-lying,maniacal,hungry,power grabbing antics……with no care whatsoever as to the possible consequences of their actions…a plague upon their houses….
as Fiach MacHugh would sing, “Follow Me Up To Carlow”
Morning Christy,
I am bringing my son Charlie over from his home in Glasgow to Bundoran on Friday, he has sampled your nectar in Scotland and England but is absolutely buzzing to taste the music in your homeland. We are staying in Derry where he is looking forward to taking in the sights, sounds, feelings, but most of all the two hours in your comapny in Bundoran.
Whatever you play will be just grand, if ‘Hey Ronnie Reagan’ (or hey Boris, Donald,Jair,Benjamin) finds it’s way onto the set list then all the better, but in truth you will hit the spot for us no matter what songs spill out.
Regards
Rory

Hi Christy. after four months tramping around I’m back in my own bed in the land of alligators and juicy oranges., not a bad feeling at all. I do miss the wild Atlantic way, it’s beauty is beyond compare..I just drove down from NY all along the blue ridge parkway.through roanaken West virginia.onto route 81. To route 17. It too has its beauty.nothing to compare to that run from Galway to Doolin…until next June all I can say is keep singing christy.people need someone to lift their spirits…

I’m just returning to Baltimore from an incredible trip to Ireland and London. I have to say that starting it in Drogheda with you was the highlight. Thank you for the shout out and the welcome to the Wee County.
Highlights of the show included Only Our Rivers Run Free, Beeswing, Missing You, and of course, Lisdoonvarna, which has become a favorite of my kids. I also really liked your new song, perhaps called As The Clock Winds Down to Zero. You and Declan were in great form as always!
Thanks again for a great show and everything you do,
Steve
Christy's reply
That song was written by Jim Page, my old Companero from Seattle….he shared it with me a few weeks back
Thanks for the reply Christy. I hope you can. As I said we are travelling by ferry from Birkenhead to Belfast. Retracing a journey my family made over 150 years ago from Dundalk to Liverpool. We are stopping of at Derry where I’m speaking at a social housing conference on the growing housing crisis and homelessness. Then like you we will be crossing the border into Donegal and on to your show in Bundoran on 4th October and Vishva’s 65th Birthday celebrations. We are looking forward to seeing you again. Take care. Tom Murtha.
Good morning Christy, I am still in awe sitting here thinking back on the wonderful journey you brought us on last night from The Cliffs of Dooneen all the ways to Spancil Hill , taking in uncle Jimmy’s wake on the way. Thanks a million for bringing Little Musgrave with you, it was great to hear it live once again. Many moons ago when I first heard it, some friends of mine came up with the idea of telling Musgrave’s story in a short film. We had permission from Ardfinnan castle to use it as a base and we also had a local hunt organised to be the horsmen. Anyway, it never got off the ground as we had no funding. Thanks again for last night and please give a big thumbs up to your sound engineer who did an excellent job as usual. Regards..John O Neill.
Christy's reply
sure will John…his name is David Meade….his input is vital to the outcome…he plays the sound desk like an instrument…its great comfort for a singer to know that no matter how quiet the singing goes, the sound engineer will send it to the furthest reaches of the room…David has been doing my sound since 2002..he has also engineered the recent recordings…some of his recordings on the forthcoming album “Magic Nights” are simply superb…here he was aided and abetted by Jimmy Higgins who sat in the producer’s chair as he rested from behind “the traps”
Little Musgrave runs like a film in my head every time I sing it ..so for me its a film already…and fair play to you John…without your persistence I’d not have sung that song last night…I think it needs to remain in the set….
Boctsi and Babs…two stars of Ardfinnan
Christy, we came to your concert in Clonmel last night and were thrilled to hear you sing the beautiful ‘Burning Times’. But the real treat was your stunning version of ‘Hurt’. Wow what a moving rendition.
Thanks for a great night

JoJo, I am always amazed when listeners go to such lengths to hear the songs…ye came from London last night, Horst and Traudel from Germany..(there may have been other long hauliers too)…..years back it used to unsettle me a bit,Id wonder how can such expectation be fulfilled. These days I have a different take as together we celebrate the songs, some of them ancient, some of them new….they come to life and resound in an atmosphere like that created in Clonmel last night …
(Clonmel is a bastardisation of the Irish name “Cluain Meala” which once described that beautiful town as being “The Vale of Honey”…if only the colonizer had taken the trouble to inflict a precise translation..we might all have been destined for the “Vale of Honey” last night..
Brian Friel wrote a brilliant play “Translations” about this sad phenomenon…enough said on the matter)
Thank you for your feedback..
Declan and I really enjoyed our two hours last night…we spoke afterwards about the atmosphere in that function room….
some gigs have that feeling of “Duende”…for me its a feeling that the gig plays itself…. I don’t have to think of what to play or how to play it, don’t have to worry about singing the high notes or playing the right chords…it all just happens effortlessly….( other nights I might struggle trying to make it happen)
Thank you for coming from London, for taking the time to offer such positive feedback….its all an important part of what sustains our carnival caravan,..our wagons skip from town to town blissfully aware of the great priviledge we enjoy….its 53 years since this tour began ( In London !!)….I marvel in wonder as it carries on ….next stop Bundoran in the County Donegal….where they are still dreaming the City of Chicago
Hi Christy,
My wife Vishva and I are travelling over from England by Ferry to see you play in Bundoran on Friday 4th October. It is her 65th Birthday.
