It brought to mind your superb cover of Natalie Merchant’s ‘Motherland’.Fantastic the way you got inside that song..I went to find it on youtube and greatly enjoyed the footage from a Carlow gig in 2013.Looks like it was taken from the stage wings, over your left shoulder…great version and atmospheric to be so close up to you ‘at work’…a real treat.
Played a Cheshire gig last night and was asked by one of her fans, to publicise the work of an American blues musician who died last year.A sad story, but a fantastic legacy by Deborah Coleman RIP.A fine player…again, via Youtube-well worth checking out…
Christy good morning,
I recently got my copy of the album of seamie o’dowd and the unwanted. Among its gems is the jewel of ‘the diamantina drover’ ,where he says in sleevenotes he first heard it from you.
Fine band, great song.

I love that song but, along the way, it somehow fell from the set…dont know when, dont know why….
It falls into that category of slow, gentle, beautiful ballads that have always attracted me..so much so that I have a treasure chest full of gems…but on any given night there are only so many that I can present…
maybe some stormy night an entire gig of slow gentle ballads…
I recall a second encore in Markethalle,Hamburg in the 80s…I did a long medley of slow gentle songs and it played out perfectly

Good morning Christy .. just finished my shift as a taxi driver here in cork.. it’s great to have live at the marquee still going on here… and the gigs out in the independent park just over during last week .. the vibe and buzz around the city has been great … not to mention the boost to the local economy… anyway I am bringing my daughter Emma (11) to her second Christy gig at the marquee.. we have front row seats this time around .. if you could play tuam beat as this is her favorite song .. I know this might not be possible on the night so no sweat if it does not work out .. so take care to you and the band and crew safe travels and see you down by the lee on 6 July … Tony and Emma …
Christy's reply
Sound Tony..Hope You and Emma have a great in De Tint….it has become a cherished gig for me , for the Band, the Crew and all the team that keep our show on the road…..
reading Emma’s age reminds me….when I was 11, I went to the Leinster Final in Croke Park with my Da ….Kildare beat Wexford that day ….63 years later I remember it fondly and vividly……( Cork beat us in the Semi)…
I love coming to Cork, so many Magic Nights upon De Banks…first gig there was City Hall with Planxty in 1972….
Hi Christy. By some divine chance you happen to be gigging five minutes from home on 12th July and also by chance I am home frome Canada at the same time. Once I realised this I bought tickets immediately for myself and my new wife. Recently we had Reel In the Flickering Light played as we signed our marriage papers. Is there any chance you could have this in your repertoire for the 12th? My new wife a new canadian fan of yours would be delighted. Thanks CMG
Christy's reply
I’ll do my best..pity about you maintaining total anonymity..prevents me welcoming your new Bride with a Flicker
Hi Christy, have you managed to catch any of Glastonbury yet? Now I don’t own any Stormzy albums but what a fantastic set by him last night. How refreshing it was to see a young man singing songs about the people to the people whist managing to upset the establishment at the same time by letting them know what most ordinary people really think instead of what they are told to think by the (mostly) right wing media. He reminded me of a young Christy Moore.
Christy's reply
been fortunate to have played there 5 times….just like everything else in the world it has changed a lot…its gotten very slick and high tech…last time I played there, gaining entry reminded me of visiting Long Kesh….its the largest festival in this part of the world….hugely regarded and successful…..but to these old ears it has become overblown and over exposed….the fatuous compere links are becoming unbearable….that said, I watched a good doc the other night about headline acts over the years, enjoyed that, hearing Michael Eavis, some great performances over the decades…played the main stage solo way back one Sunday afternoon in the mid 80s, recorded a bodhrán solo from that gig and used it on the on the “Traveller” album 20 years later…
dont know Stormzy but I’ll check him out on your recommendation..caught a bit of Johnny Marr today
PS just watched Stormzy …..fair play to you…he is some chanter
We are SO excited to be going to the concert on July 13/19 in Dundalk!!! We are visiting family in Belfast … attending a family wedding. Tickets are a birthday gift for my partner, Bernard. He was born in Belfast but has lived in North Vancouver BC Canada since 1975. We are huge fans and this concert is an unexpected highlight of the trip.
Can you please play Lisdoonvarna!!! 😊 (among others!!!!!)
Christy's reply
Carrickdale is not entirely unlike The Commodore…a bit closer to home ( for me !)
Loved my trips to Vancouver, nearly met De Niro there but I had to stand him up
Without insult intended… I’d never heard of you sir.
About two weeks before our recent trip to visit Ireland, I read an article indicating that it was almost illegal to cross the Burren without Christy Moore’s “Lisdoonvarna” playing at full volume. I immediately purchased “Live at Vicar Street” and fell in love with your music. Sure enough as we pulled into the Roadside Tavern for a cold round of Stouts and a Sandwich, guess what was playing in my head. As we headed north out of town back to Ballyvaughan, the windows were down and all four of us sang along to your glorious song! Wished we could have been there in the day. Thanks for making our trip and giving us the best souvenir to bring back to Canada. We played it loudly on the back patio today and enjoyed it again. Up ta Varna!
Hope to see you touring here sooner than later. Keep us informed!

Hi All. I was listening to RTE Radio 1 tonight from 10 to 11pm where the 50 years of Sunday Miscellany was celebrated in retrospect, from next Weds they are going to broadcast the programmes with new material, any idea when your segment will be on Christy ? maybe John Connell the Cow Book man will be on the same programme,,?, Long may the sun shine,,beir bua agus beannacht, H
Christy's reply
I’ve no idea when that programme will go to air…..they did say that they would let me know…..got a spin on Miscellany a few Sundays back….cant remember which song !… maybe Continental Ceili…..I was half asleep at the time waiting for Mass to start on the wireless …..
Well Christy they say things come in 3s and so it happened this week.
Firstly i stepped out of work to find a couple of wee girls playing on a rarely seen Bogie as it whizzed along the pavement in front of me and i thought ‘Bogey’s bonnie bairn’.
Then heading next day to work someone on the radio was talking about Pavarotti and his big legacy, yip i thought ,big alright ,with all the grub you mention he nipped off to consume when you tried to watch him sing, and told of in the box set disc which i was gorging on last weekend.
I wondered how the hat trick would arrive but today grafting in Glasgow i came out of my car park to glance up and see i was parked on Montrose Street, which i often hear you mention in gigs i think for ‘black is the colour’.
The treble has come up ( my kids even gave me celtic treble treble gin yesterday).
It is a funny old place, but there is a song in everything…very often one of yours !
Lather on the after sun lotion.

One of two new verses I found since first hearing this song in the Cockermouth Folk Club in The Lake District in 1967. It was sung by Muriel Greaves who ran the club….
Spancil Hill, your rendition of it got an airing, the Rolling Wave, Radio One on Sunday evening, as the show host told us it was the twenty third of June. One night in UCC many moons ago, at a gig in the Boole lecture theatre it was shouted out to you as a request (not sure was it called out in sarcasm….) but you stopped and told the audience member you’d sing it but added that you had wondered ‘who bought the record’ which brought laughter.
Christy's reply
Morra Ed..been trying to get in touch..your emails bounce back…
Spancilhill is a great song..I can still remember hearing it for the first time back in 1965 in John Minogue’s “The Hotel”, Tulla Co Clare…a few of us were “kept back” at closing time…thats when I first heard it….I was instantly smitten… next day John Minogue arrived into The National Bank with his weekend lodgement and the words of the song for me…I went straight to Mrs Tubridy’s Lodging House after work and began to learn it…
I hope to include a version on a forthcoming live album ….its taken from Barrowland, Glasgow and 2,000 Glaswegian Gaels sing it with me…a magic moment from a memorable night
Dear Christy, total long shot here but I always say there’s no harm in asking:) My youngest sister is getting married in July and we are coming home to Kiltimagh from all over the world for the celebrations. As part of the festivities we are fulfilling life long dreams of seeing you live and making the journey to Athlone for July 5th. I’ve written a little poem for the happy couple and I wondered if you might read it? Again a total long shot I know, but even a “cheers to Róisín and Anto on their upcoming wedding” would be brill! Dear Christy,
Thank you ever so much for including “Reel in the Flickering Light” last Thursday at the NCH. After enjoying the incredible show up to that point, Moy was surprised, to say the least, and thrilled to hear you sing it live. After the show, she noted that you changed about “three words.” We noted how you mentioned you had to practise, as you hadn’t played it live in such a long time. We’re hoping that knowing even great musicians still practise will encourage her to keep up her fiddle. We were thoroughly impressed by the music, the tributes, and the messages from the night. Go raibh míle maith agat.

Hello dear Christy,
Hope the longest day was a good one for you and you’ll have a lovely summer.
We are now home a couple of days and brought back marvellous memories from our Island trip. Three weeks at Beara’s breathtaking landscape went very well and then we set off for another week in the north-west …
It was a return to familiar places as we spent many holidays in County Sligo in the eighties. So again we climbed Knocknarea in honour to Queen Maeve, visited Lissadell House and saw many things have changed there, walked the promenade in breezy Strandhill, went to Hargadon’s nice old-world pub and strolled into the wood-carving butcher’s shop. He entertained us with exciting stories of the ancient heroes and made a carving for us with “An Torc Dubh” and Benbulben.
And the best of all were our two nights at Hawk’s Well Theatre, the venue where we encountered you in 1983 – also Solo. Just you on stage with your guitars and bodhran (The Well was terrific!) is still and always an incredible experience! We enjoyed so much these two magic nights and especially loved to hear many of the rare songs as Wandering Aongus, Burning Times, Two Island Swans, Butterfly, Raggle Taggle Gypsy, Magdalen Laundries, Continental Ceili and Easter Snow. The Highlights for me were at the first gig The Boy from Tamlaghduff and at second night The Travelling People – very different songs but both so beautiful and emotional!
GO RAIBH MAITH AGAT – DANKE!!!
It was also a lovely surprise to see Seamie O’Dowd again as your accompanist for a few songs. Many thanks to him too and of course to your fantastic Crew. Meeting the international 4711ers-Gang was a pleasure as well.
Summer greetings,
Traudel
Christy's reply
Seamie is such a musical player…I’m working on a new album (Live Tracks) and some of the music he plays is very beautiful….
Thank you for the memory of 1983….I remember that the Hawswell was administered then by Rhoda McManus…..I played in the Wexford Arts Centre for Rhoda in the 70s. Also remember her being involved in the original Project Arts Centre in King St., Dublin..
I am enjoying the return of some earlier songs….its what I love about real songs..they do not age (unlike the singer !)….the story from “The Well” is thousands of years old…it sits perfectly beside “Ringing The Bell”, a recent song….
It is encouraging, uplifting, inspiring to have contact with those of you who hear the songs like I hear them myself…..over a year tens of thousands come to listen, they create a great energy…among them are thousands who have a deeper interest, among them are hundreds who go in deeper still, among them are those few who have followed on for decades, who hear the songs as I hear them myself,
Seamie would be one of the few musicians who love the songs like I love them myself
Hey Christy, I hope you are keeping well. James Lynch from Prosperous here. Also a Newbridge College student back in the day.
I remember my first ever concert was at Goffs for one of your shows, when I was a very young chap. My father and I still attend as often as we can. Whether it is the Riverbank or Vicar St., it’s something we always look forward to.
Some friends and I are making a film about a young Irish Ultra Runner (also a friend) called Paddy O’Leary, who just returned home from America to take on the Wicklow Round – a 26-peak, 100km, off-trail challenge in the mountains. Well it went better than expected…he set a new record for it!
The short film is a passion project for us all, including Paddy and your song The Lost Tribe of the Wicklow Mountains became the anthem for our trip as we were dragging cameras and gear up and down mountains trying to keep up with Paddy! So I was wondering if we could have a chat about somehow including the song audio in the final piece? It’s completely not-for-profit on our end but we would certainly be willing to make ends meet to make it happen. Here’s a look at the trailer we put together: https://vimeo.com/303169914/620f61d103
Hi Christy…I’m back on my usual tramping excursion around the Rocky seashore . But in Cadiz at the moment. I see your still belting out your tunes, maybe this year I will make a conserted effort to catch one of your shows. My auld Fiat ducato is patiently waiting my return in Easkey.. . There’s nothing like two boiled eggs and a cut of soda bread parked along a spot where even Google can’t reach. Slan
Christy's reply
you are sounding good..thats a lovely performance there…love the ring off your finger pickin…..
as Tom Tuohy sings
Boiled eggs
fried eggs
poached eggs
scrambled eggs
baked eggs
devilled eggs..
my favourite variety used to be;
6 streaky rashers fried on the open hearth, two dark yoked eggs simmered in the bubbling fat, then decent 3 cuts of dark home-made brown bread to absorb the glorious as it crisps the wholesome into heart warming dark croutons…..get a mug of the strongest sweet tea, lay the eggs upon the fried bread and pierce the dark yokes…..give Thanks to God herself for providing such a feast and tuck in…..
Me, my parish, and the All Ireland winning hurling team of 2018 are huge fans of Christy (esp. Hego!!) We love to have you in an open concert in St. Patricks GAA Club at the end of Aug 2019. Experience Limericks Finest & Return Christy Moores Legends. Please call to discuss more if you are up for it. Kieran Dore 087-2755767
Christy's reply
I’ve always been up for it Kieran….but there is a process we all gotta go through…like I’d love to play for Kildare but it would take more then a post for it to happen (If I was 50 years younger might help)….I experience Limerick’s finest every time I get to play in Plessey…what a great venue on the Majestic River…Fair play to Chuck Feeney…..
Can’t wait to read the full story of you and Paddy Reilly in a cellar lock in…likely to be your version of ‘the basement tapes’!? I hope there’s some writing going on,in between your gigs.
Viva,Bob…last time he played a huge outdoor gig here…2011 Finsbury Park Feis/Fleadh…aided and abetted by you and Dec playing a blinder in the early evening… song and dance men, all!

Thank you Christy.
Le meas, James
thats all sorted James…
Hi Christy…I’m back on my usual tramping excursion around the Rocky seashore . But in Cadiz at the moment. I see your still belting out your tunes, maybe this year I will make a conserted effort to catch one of your shows. My auld Fiat ducato is patiently waiting my return in Easkey.. . There’s nothing like two boiled eggs and a cut of soda bread parked along a spot where even Google can’t reach. Slan
you are sounding good..thats a lovely performance there…love the ring off your finger pickin…..
as Tom Tuohy sings
Boiled eggs
fried eggs
poached eggs
scrambled eggs
baked eggs
devilled eggs..
my favourite variety used to be;
6 streaky rashers fried on the open hearth, two dark yoked eggs simmered in the bubbling fat, then decent 3 cuts of dark home-made brown bread to absorb the glorious as it crisps the wholesome into heart warming dark croutons…..get a mug of the strongest sweet tea, lay the eggs upon the fried bread and pierce the dark yokes…..give Thanks to God herself for providing such a feast and tuck in…..
Hi Christy
Can’t wait to read the full story of you and Paddy Reilly in a cellar lock in…likely to be your version of ‘the basement tapes’!? I hope there’s some writing going on,in between your gigs.
Viva,Bob…last time he played a huge outdoor gig here…2011 Finsbury Park Feis/Fleadh…aided and abetted by you and Dec playing a blinder in the early evening… song and dance men, all!
Dave
your recent comm lead me to “Simply Dylan” ..I enjoyed their “Rolling Stone”…that lead me off on a surf….more time gone up in smoke !!!
