Dear Christy, the long cold winter seemed endless, but now springtime has come and brings Uwe and me closer to the concerts we were waiting for so long. In a couple of days our long journey from Hamburg to the hills of Donegal will begin. From Letterkenny we will follow your path to the gigs in Carrick-on-Shannon, Westport and Cavan. We are looking forward to see you and the crew and to meet up with some other 4711ers after a one year break.

Hi All…its been a great Easter for music,,, two mighty gigs in Bantry with listeners from Holland, Germany, UK and Timoleague !! and in fairness to the Irish TV and radio stations they had some great programmes, The Rolling Wave on RTE Radio featured a few tracks from the gig recorded by Planxty in Bremen in 1979 and now available in CD. Then last night on TG4 was a repeat of the Gradam Ceoil 2018 from Belfast and on RTE The Gloaming gig from the NCH,,, tonight on TG4 at 9.30 Song of Granite telling the story of Joe Heaney and featuring our very own Colm and Roisin Seoighe from remote Connemare will be well worth watching,,, after that also on TG4 at 11.30 will be No Disco the Documentary on Planxty,,,and from the sublime to the ridiculous I wonder will Pairofbrowneyes be worth a bet in the Grand National ?? beir bua agus beannacht . there was a lovely feel to those two Bantry gigs….over 17 years in Moulnaskehagh we made many connections in the Bantry area…I think it was reflected in the atmosphere of those two gigs…It was fitting to remember John Bowen and Bob Walsh….two departed neighbours of ours with whom we spent joyful times….
This afternoon, I finally got round to watching a download from YouTube, about Liam O’Flynn. Then I looked online for anything new. Typing in tears now, as I learn that that fabulous man died a couple of weeks ago.
His very solo first album has never been released on CD afaik, so I’m listening to his exquisite version of Limerick’s Lamentation which has been uploaded to YouTube a couple of times – there’s an old clip of Seamus Ennis, on that programme I watched earlier, commenting on the relationship of slow airs and the human voice.
Sorry to blather, Christy, and I hope you’re otherwise well.
RIP Liam O’Flynn, and may your cemetery be ever merry and full of joyous tunes – gentle sympathies to all affected by this loss xx

Liam’s death unleashed a swell of emotion from many people around the world who were deeply moved by the man and his music….its that time now for those of us of Liam’s generation…one by one we take our leave…Liam leaves a great body of recorded work in his wake…but also a huge gap for those who loved him….
but most of all for his Wife, his Sister and extended family

Sorry to be begging Christy but when you’re in York, my wife passes 40…she loves Ordinary Man, but our son is autistic and brain damaged but loves your music. His special school has recently gone into special measures and due to the maniac head teacher, he hasn’t been into school since Jan 28 and is missing his friends. We don’t normally beg but please can you see us for just 2 minutes before the York gig and see him, it would make his sad year so much better.

Brought it all back to me tonight,The Brow, The Protestant Road, The Butts, The Ridge, Coon, The Salmon Pool, Agars post office, Jones shop, Sheerans, Moloneys, The Kellys, Stedmonds, Bradleys , Toby the Postman, The Kinsellas, Steve Silvermint, Nixie Comerford and, of course….The Walshes…Mick was such a great neighbour..I remember our first night in Coolcullen..we knew no one.. the very first morning there was a bag of spuds, carrots and onions at the front door…it was ages before I learnt it was your grandad that left them there…great times…twas a pleasure to sing that song for your Mam…Val and I send our best wishes to all the family
Good to read the latest chat – and to see that you have plenty of work simmering away. Hopefully it will all come to fruition. Was shocked at how personal the death of Liam felt – I never met him but he just seemed to e a part of the family. When I hear pipes it is always Liam I think of and I think of him like a king or how it used to be with the world heavyweight champion – there was only one and in natural succession to the generations before. Thank God there are more pipers around now – many of them good but still none that can yet be thought of as “THE” king of the pipers. Thank God for the recordings so that we can still hear him. May his soul soar like the airs that he played.

I listen all his different collaborations….everything sounds so good….
at the end of the day it is Liam’s Solo playing that I love most of all…Chanter,Drones and Regulators perfectly tuned as he pipes out “The Gold Ring” “a Stór mo chroí”
To add to the comments about Liam O’Flynn. We loved Planxty so much back in the 70’s when I was married (in my late teens) but before our children arrived. Still cannot part with the old albums and, whenever we listen, those haunting notes of his pipes still send an amazing shiver up the spine. The notes were the essence of the group and he just sat there in the middle of it all looking like the real gentleman. We always thought he must have been the nicest and mildest of men. We are together 48 years on and still play the old music which was such a massive part of our early years together (and still is). We shall grieve for Liam and we hope that you can add a London date to the tour later in the year Christy. Long may your music continue.

In a couple of hours we start the walk from hawick among the hills to finish in time to see the footie played at the cathedral on the hill on saturday afternoon in the shadow of newcastle’s gallowgate, to raise some cash and awareness for foodbanks and more. What a great surprise and delight to see your ‘chat’ pop up just in time. We will now have the first few hours readily filled with stories of your songs( 50 hours to fill remember) and the border sheep will be startled with our renditions of ‘hey ronnie Reagan’ and other favourites. Keep up the good work ,as we should have our energies restored by Liverpool, cork, edinburgh and the barras. Around this time 50 years ago I got my first gig there in The Bridge Hotel where “The High Level Ranters” were the resident Band…. Johnny Handle, Colin Ross, Tom Gilfellon, Rae Fisher and Alastair Anderson used to rattle it out there every Thursday night….The Marsden Rattlers had a great club nearby on Sun nights..John Doonan and family were nearby in Hebburn, Jim Sharp ran a club in Ponteland, Mike Elliot’s was in Sunderlad, The Elliot family in Birtley, other clubs in Gateshead, Alnwick,Trimdon….me tootlin around in my “56 VW Beetle ( £50 in Sheffield), Sleeping Bag and Guitar ( £40 in Ivor Mairants London, a Yamaha FG 180)…..this good friday morning has me in reflective mood !

Hope this finds you well. We are feeling sorry about the passing of Liam O’Flynn. The shocking news left us in silence for a while. Last Sunday night as we drove through Bantry his gigs at the MoT-Festivals were brought to mind. We also had the privilege to hear him in our home town’s folk club more than 30 years ago, but the last time we enjoyed the sheer beauty of his playing was in St Brendan’s Church in August 2012. RIP Liam
This was a dreadful winter with some very sad losses. Now we are back to Beara with mixed emotions. Very glad to be again to this simply wonderful place but we are missing our dear old friend Sean deeply. At the very end of last year we had to lay him to rest on Bere Island.
Good that now spring is in the air and the sun is shining …

I was at Martin Lynch’s new play We’ll Walk Hand in Hand, written and produced to mark the 50th Anniversary of the N.I. Civil Rights Association…a well-constructed play and links old and new versions of the inequalities in our society over the last 50 years to present day. I was emotional, listening to the cast singing ‘We shall not be moved’. Singer-activists like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez’s versions spring to mind. Mary

its 30 years since I played solo gigs at the National Concert Hall ( i did a few guestspots in the interim ) Last time I played there I was joined by my 3 sisters Eilish, Anne and Terry….
A year to the day yesterday since one of the greatest gigs in my life… Being called up to sing Tuam Beat with the legend himself! Thanks again Christy! I’ve manage by some minor miracle to get tickets for myself and my wife and then separately for my parents right at the back but all the same it will be a grand night out if you’re there. A big ask I know bits my parents 50th wedding anniversary coming up and if you could possibly give them a nod on the evening it would make our year. Christy, thank you for the link to Laoi Na Pibe it’s a beautiful tribute to Liam. I hope it is ok for me to say that I agree with Kevin’s comment ‘we gotta sing em louder’. I was at Martin Lynch’s new play We’ll Walk Hand in Hand, written and produced to mark the 50th Anniversary of the N.I. Civil Rights Association…a well-constructed play and links old and new versions of the inequalities in our society over the last 50 years to present day. I was emotional, listening to the cast singing ‘We shall not be moved’. Singer-activists like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez’s versions spring to mind. Mary
