Hello christy
I am wondering if it would be ok to post a recording of my song “we all are clowns” on this forum? Happy Easter to you!
Many thanks
Seamus noone
it is a sunny morning here, and i sit gazing at many hundreds of LPs and many more than that in CDs but this morning i selected ‘where i come from’ triple, on comes ‘giuseppe/away ye broken heart’ and i just wanted to say thank you. there are very, very few songs in the many thousands before me that move me in anything even approaching the way that does, such injustice, such beauty. thank you.

Life after Life ( A Guildford Four Memoir) By Paddy Armstrong and Mary Elaine Tynan (Gill publisher)…
Two weeks ago I was invited to sing a song at the launch of this book.I thought that I might sing “Giuseppe” until I heard Paddy Armstrong speak after which I decided to sing “The Voyage” (from Johnny Duhan)….At the launch Paddy was surrounded by loving family, neighbours, friends and well-wishers some of whom had travelled long distance to celebrate Paddy’s life and achievement….
After a concert in Derry many years ago I was given a cassette of this song…no name nor information…just “Away ye Broken Heart” it took a long time to ascertain that it was a song from Phil Stewart.I was smitten by the lyric and melody..they go straight to the heart…..years later I spontaneosly sang it after “Giuseppe” at a gig in Belfast..
Hi Christy and apologies for the delayed response to your interest in Coolaney’s Mountain Inn – someone must have pulled the plug on me delay line ?
‘ fraid no music, lock-ins, lock-outs or even a Danno to be got in Rockfield these 15 years or more – though they’re not shy to lay claim to having a few notable passers through their history. Fellas like Christy Moore, Christie Moor and a big house of a fella called Chrios Tí Mór ????
Safe Journey to bonnie Scotland and enjoy your pilgrimage, especially to Barrowland and we’ll see you back in Connaught on your return.
When ye started the Voyage, there was just him and you…..
Now gathered ’round you, you have a whole crew.
Christy's reply
enjoyed visiting the Ballisodare Flashback Forum….I read there where someone compared Ballisodare to Electric Picnic….a bit like comparing Queen Maeve’s Bed to the Raddisson Blue in Rosse’s Point…
I probably have a carefully honed memory of The Mountain Inn…it was one of a myriad of venues I loved back in the 70s….along with Coolara House, The Kon-Tiki, Rakish Paddy’s Lanesborough, The Hidden Inn Kilmanahan, The Rustic Inn Abbeyshrule, The Unyoke in Wexford, The Cherry Tree in Clogherhead, The Merriman in Scariff, The West End Ballyraggett, THe Brown Pub in Kealkill,The Auld Sheebeen in Moate,Pedigree Corner where 4 Counties meet, The Arkle Bar in Gowran, each of these venues (and many more) had individual characteristics, had unique proprietors, decor, modus operandi, attitudes to licencing laws and settlement etiquette…..at a great venue near Thurles (The Ragg) it was expected that The National Anthem be sung by the visiting artiste before the gig… two venues where the proprietors were also Undertakers and the “dressing rooms” were coffin stores…..I recall members of Planxty reclining in Coffins after dying the death in Ballinrobe….Kennedy’s of Puckaune was always a great destination for a variety of reasons, not least the Man of the house…..anyway JIm, back to The Mountain Inn Coolaney near Colooney…I do stray from topic betimes which reminds me…the oldest Folk Club in England is “The Topic” in Bradford….(hopefully the last sentance will not reach the ears of the Mudcat Forum where it could cause consternation, hernia rupture, calls for rendition, transportation, beheading and/or life long banishment from the EFDSS, CCE, ICA, GAA, FCA, ESB, RAOB, AIB,U2,Alabama3,WE4, SVDP,INTO,RGDATA,and other affiliated bodies…
Getting ready for Barrowland now….extra vitamins, jogging daily, stretching ( the bounds of credibiity), novenas to Our Lady of Knock, St Mother Teresa and Blessed Martin De Porres (to be on the safe side),Guitars are being re-fretted and Bodhráns shaved, points and tappets checked, oil topped up and brake pads replaced….
Hi Christy. I’m an amateur songwriter who is highly influenced by your good self. I’ve written a collection of songs based on co Louth. They include songs about
Collier the highwayman.
Carlingford maritime diaster 1914.
West Gate Mill
Pitch and Toss
Catholic Soap.
I know you probably get bombarded with songs but these would really suit your style. I’d love you to have a look at them.
What’s the best way to send the to you.
Christy's reply
Hey Pitch, put one up here if you wish…..I have a lot of new songs on the stove these days and cannot take further compositions into the work room at this time… I also have a backlog to navigate
Christy thank you so much for your prompt reply to my question. We really are looking forward to seeing you again soon. Yes, we are looking forward to further wandering!

I was in Norwich the day England won the World Cup…working up the road in Westwick at Ross Foods..watched it on a television in a shop window
Enjoyable gig at Balor in Ballybofey last night for the Donegal launch of Mick Blake’s Oblivious. Wonderful collection of songs, and each one of them packing a punch. Good to meet up with the Donegal wing of the 4711ers too. Safe sailing to Scotland, and hope to catch you soon after your return – it’s been TOO long since my last gig.
Christy's reply
for your penance walk up Croagh Patrick backwards with your two shinbones in your pocket and your head stuck under your arm..hope to return to Derry in October ..waiting for confirmation from the promoter
Christy I really hope you will add a gig in Norfolk/Cambridgeshire/Liverpool in the near future as myself and my husband haven’t been able to see you play for two years. Any change of some additional UK dates? We will be in Wicklow at the beginning of June but no gigs over there either. Here’s hoping we will be able to see you soon. We just love your music.
Paula
Christy's reply
Paula, Hopefully we will return to Liverpool next Spring…have no indication of anything pending in Nor/Cam…we will visit Watford, (a wee hop down the M11 !) Worthing and London (RFH) this September..they are posted on gig page….enjoy yourselves in June when you go wandering “Among The Wicklow Hills”
I have to ask…the Green Briar? It was on the skirts of the Blackmountain. I worked there back in the day during the 70’s usually in the folk club. It was always full to the rafters as nobody went in to the deserted city centre…unlike now. Did you play there?
Christy's reply
Played the Green Briar twice (I think)…once a solo gig in the late 70s and later circa 1982 a Moving Hearts gig which was wild and wonderful…I think it may have been filmed for Channel 4 ….cant recall ever seeing footage
Working in the garden all day and enjoying a well earned cuppa. Had the best company with Lily and the Gardener. I’m now walking along the West Coast of Clare…love that song. We were at the Planxty reunion in Waterfront 2005. Thanks for the journey Christy. Look forward to another Belfast gig down the line. Mary
Christy's reply
All those wonderful nights I spent on stage with Planxty…playing “The West Coast of Clare” was always a high point for me…. Liam’s beautiful plaintive whistle, Donal and Andy’s riffing, our 3 voices at the end….
“Sorrow and sadness, bitterness, grief,
Memories I have of you, wont leave me in peace.
My mind keeps running back to The West Coast of Clare,
Thinking of you and the times we had there”
I wish you happy hours in your garden…hope to be back beneath The Green Briar in October
Morning all. Great night in Claremorris last night, your like a good wine you get better as you mature ! Lovely venue fair play to John Corless and all the staff there. Beautiful day in the west to day. God bless and keep you safe Christy.
Christy's reply
John and Crew sure do run a good venue..Claremorris can be proud of them…..all thats needed now is for Sam to pay a visit…
You know how sometimes even when your own children are annoying? Wimbledon is like that. Sent to test the faith in God. Some days the faith is strong. Some days not. We too have reached historic heights in the last decade. Especially when we now find ourselves in the same league as the mighty Sheffield. Ill catch them next at home to Peterborough on Easter Monday. The great Bob Paisley once said ‘Mind you, I’ve been here during the bad times too – one year we came second! ‘ xx
Ps. Your talk of the Lily Whites brought to mind the Creggan White Hare. Sung so well by Daoiri Farrell.
Hello Christy, it’s very sunny today. I fancy a trip to the coast for the cockles. Though we are at home to Bristol Rovers mid table mediocrity doesn’t require my attendance today. We were very lucky to have attended the Radio 2 Folk Awards the other night. It’s a bit like a buffet on a cruise ship. So, my favourite was Daoiri Farrell a jolly Dublin fellow with a sublime rendition of Van Diemans Land. Full of character and expression for a young man. Have you heard him? Mick is at Aintree this weekend with as many family members as he can squeeze into a Hiace. I said 20 fair pounds on Measure of My Dreams, as a nod to the great Shane. Anyhoo, we’ve the tickets bought for September. But before that, the Stations of the Cross commence on the 29th of April. Keep well. Xx
Christy's reply
Yes indeed Anuk..the 4 Joyful Mysteries loom as we prepare to make Pilgrimage towards the Carousel of Healing..
I’ve been listening to Daoiri Farrell since he was a gasún…all songsters here are very proud of his progress…particularly the listeners from the Góilín Singers club which he has attended for many years..
There is a fresh revival of interest in Traditional Folk songs here..it brings great joy to attend some of the sessions currently emerging..in recent months we have heard numerous young singers singing in the “old”style…echoes of Maggie Barry, Frank Harte, Luke Kelly, Sandy Denny, Annie Briggs, Peter Bellamy, The Watersons resound…..fresh”old”songs newly discovered as another generation go searching the archives (just like we did half a century ago)..in Dublin the revival has thrown up singers like Daoiri, Landless, The Vagabonds, Lynched (now called Lankum) to name but a few….
Whats this “mid-table mediocrity” you mention.?.surely not the words of a loyal supporter..its at times like these that the mettle of the real supporter is tested…over here we have followed our Lily Whites right thru the Lower Division of the national GAA League…today we stand proud on the brink of a return to premiership GAA Football…we have travelled the lanes and boreens with flasks and sangwedges in the boot…said rosaries as we trevailed nether regions in support of our beloved “Flourbags”…I assume this is but a blip in your devotion to Wimbledon….Shine On Anuk & Mick & Crew..

Hi Christy. Thanks for your reply. It’s great discussing the songs and hearing different points of view. You made some good points there. Over time the song discussed might grow on me a bit. And sure if it doesn’t, I’ve hundreds of other Christy songs to listen to – happy days. It took me a long time to get into Allende and now it’s one of my favorites songs. The guestbook is brilliant, long may it continue. Have a good weekend.

Just home from Claremorris..a lovely Community-run Town Hall by a great collective of voluntary people all of them proud of their venue….
Your mention of Allende brings back another night in Mayo some years back….a visiting American took great exception to my rendition of Morrissey’s “America, You are not The World”….she lay in ambush at the stage door and gave me the two barrells….she assured me that I would never be allowed into America again, that she was going to write to Time Magazine ( and Newsweek)..most memorable was her parting shot…”and who is this Hallendi guy you say we killed?”…..(I had also sung “Allende” that night)…..the promoter wanted to give her her money back but I stood firm….we had played 30 songs and there were only two that she did not like….I offered her 2 euro but she stormed off back to Texas in a fierce huff …..
Another night in Australia the Irish Ambassador took grave exception to my singing “Back Home in Derry” on ABC Radio…..it was a long time ago , probably best forgotten, but I remember him fondly….
all grist to the mill,
the wagons are parked now for two weeks.. then we sail over to Scotland for 4 concerts…..”Come All You Dreamers”
Hi Christy. Thanks for your reply. To be able to interact with someone such as yourself about the songs, where else would you get it.
I know songs with a bit of humour are needed. In recent times, Honda 50, Amsterdam and Ruby all had humour and are great songs. I remember hearing the arthur’s day song and thinking – that’s my hero – going against the tide a bit, resulting in some people thinking hard and then changing their view about something. It was only a moment, but it was a great one.
This new one, I think it hints as if it’s a song with a good cause, and also some humour, but for me it achieves neither. Singing about things like the govt and the bankers these days, I think it’s a bit easy. It’s sure to get the cheers but when I hear it I just think, you’re better than this. Only my opinion and that’s all it is. I know many other people would disagree with me.
Very far east Christy, it’s so far east it might even be west.
Christy's reply
Hey Der,
When I created this forum (maybe 10 years ago) my primary motive was that it might achieve this very purpose….talking about songs…since than the forum has become many things to many people, has developed various branch lines and become a welcome adjunct to my working life…good to have your views aired here….
I dont agree that the song has “neither cause nor humour”…for me, it has both…I enjoy the reference to the canvassing process, the lying cynicism visited upon the stretched electorate, not many in the audience burn polish coal but it raises smoke, the media is besotted with talk of water charges, here we get a chance to laugh at the futility of it all…it goes on and on, this political football which is no longer about water, more like a mixed doubles ping pong quarter final between liars and exploiters…people are being fucked over increasingly in almost every area of life by this system of OURS….by Political Parties, Bureaucrats, Bankers, (some)Police,(some)Clergy and sometimes in the face of great odds we need to laugh, we need to fall back upon a bit of black humour……I dont feel like I’m getting the “laughs and cheers”….Pat’s song references dilemna that excercise most of us these days….laughing does not trivialise, just diverts momentarily……
just like yourself Der, this is only my opinion… your post has allowed me to voice it….Up Down
PS….the song “Arthur’s Day” also receieved some very bad press but, at the end of the day, whats another song..
