I have a special request from my daughter Sinéad for the Continental Céile and if you can manage this it would make her night! Having booked tickets in the N.O.H. on many occasions, I somehow mixed up the seating on this occasion and instead of booking four rows from the front in stalls, we are four rows from the back and I didn’t notice until it was too late to change! Sinéad reckons you will never hear her if she attempts to get this request in on the night.

Continental Céilí…a great song from the pen of Johnny Mulhearn….
I loved recording it way back 40 years ago…I love to sing it here in the work room but have never been able to sing it live….it always seems to fall asunder….the rhythms of Johnny’s lyric are contra to the basic rhythm of the melody….audience percussive clapping always favour the latter and I begin to falter between the cacophony….
Recording that “ordinary man” album was a happy time….
I rehearsed the songs with Donal Lunny & Arty McGlynn… we recorded in Nicky Ryan’s studio in Artane…it was a special studio lovingly assembled on a shoestring by Nicky and his wife Roma….other players played on different tracks, Liam Óg O’Flynn, Andy Irvine,Anto Drennan, Tony Molloy, Noel Bridgeman and (most notably) Eithne Ní Bhraionán sang haunting harmonies (pre Enya)
Sadly,its unlikely that I’ll be able to sing Cont.Ceili for Sinéad but, that said, anything can happen when the bats begin to fly in that Wexford Opera House

Morra Christy, i’ve watched a few of John’s programs, I loved the statement “ The 1st music we hear is our mother’s heartbeat” both beautiful and has brought a lovely feeling to mind. John’s a very good presenter, he has a genuine interest in the subjects he covers , I recall his interview with yourself and Scullion on Bobby’s life and music, the nuances have changed over the years, punctuation, timing, rhythm.Oh I wish….
Jinx makes the comfortable uncomfortable and i love it , kicks like a mule and takes no prisoners, that guitar gets some punishment and lyrics of conviction.
John put up a clip of ATN from behind you and Joxer was leaping out of the tent, must have been a great buzz for you all, to think no sound check not even a 1-2check Check 3-4 say’s everything about the team .
19 pubs in Newbridge at one time, I counted 10 in Castledermot,, now 3 and a traffic light, Kieran has invited myself and Sean to do a gig in the garden on the 29th August , all proceeds going to Woman’s Aid, it will be my first time performing in Dublin since i last sang a few songs for them back in the early 90’s with Francis Conway and Sonny Condell
Glen has left a void in humanity, he had a lovely way about him, he sang , he shared, he lifted, I only saw him perform the once in Boston, no mic no amplified guitar, walked out front and sang his heart out .
I’ll be at the back door on the 23rd and 30th with me ham and mustard sandwiches and a flask of strong tea .

I’m back. Overall I liked it. If you give anybody a sort of blank canvass and say fill us in on Irish music, you might get several descriptions. Using these three terms he wants to avail of, John sets off, he does it well plus illustrating where our music is going or might be heading in.

Dear Christy. It seems to be a contradiction. But I believe in democracy to say that most of the Germans do not have forgotten. On the other side we have to realize that the right wing party is leading in election surveys. It’s frightening!!
German goverments always stand on Israel’s side. Critisizing only in a few and fine nuances. And these are often discussed heavily then. I had to check out a term for it: Prisoned in History or a knot…(?)

it was the late John Reynolds who conceived and gave birth to both the “Electric Picnic ” and “All together Now”….John was a visionary ….a native of Longford …(a nephew of Albert ) …..he once told me that his first promotion was a 1981 “Moving Hearts” concert in The Longford Arms Hotel when he 17 years old…I recall the night clearly for many reasons…later on he brought me to two of his early Electric Picnics…among other projects he also built the POD nightclub where ,one night, both myself and Damien Dempsey played together in support of Jinx Lennon……
Jinx is a rare and beautiful agitation propaganda artist..the real deal…

I think back to the Galway races of my hay day with great affection…we had very little but, by jasus, we made the most of it, not a “Philip Tracey” to be seen

The assembled Choir was outstanding
I arrived at Curraghmore at 2…went on stage at 3.30….finished at 4.35…
sat chatting with Kneecap for an hour and left for home…
back here at 8 and had the dinner…
was unable to catch any other gigs….
Very different from my usual gig….I’m told there was 10,000 gathered… 6 in the tent and four outside….I was unable to do a soundcheck but the crew had everything set up perfectly…. it took me a while to find my rhythm, to begin to hear what I was doing…the entire tent seemed to know the words of every song…I had a few things planned but abandoned all that as I realised what was required…I did get to pay a tribute to our lost balladeer… we all sang The Auld Triangle together and we all felt his presence and mourned his passing;

The place started filling up soon after the wonderful gig by Muireann Bradley and by 3.30 the crowds were overflowing outside around the Tent. It was fascinating to see your team assemble the stage in jig time ! Fair play to them all. You certainly got a huge welcome, your tribute to Glen was so emotional and the rollercoaster continued for the next hour. The listeners were on fire, matching your own energy ! They responded to the lyrics of each song and so many knew them all so well. It was such a buzz to be there among such a very young demographic ! GRMMA beir bua agus beannacht. H

Dear Christy. I was watching a short video of your tonight’s gig. Singing ‘The Auld Triangle’ as a tribute to Glen Hansard feels good. And the meeting of many buskers singing ‘Falling Slowly’ in a big crowd is also comforting. No place doing so could be better than around the Luke Kelly statue.

Aisling (one of my twin daughters) and Cormac her partner making the trip to Curraghmore for Saturday , the baton keeps being handed down and we try and keep the Yellow Furze connection, I know they would love to hear Beeswing .
