I’m quarter Dowling myself…I be a grandson of Bridie Dowling who grew up in Barronstown , Miltown….about 12 miles from Naas if you know the back roads..its quite a common name in parts of Kildare…but a rare breed indeed in many ways…I recall Dowlings pub in Naas and a filling station of the same name…

Hey Tony….I was side stage getting wired up…I felt that atmosphere myself…all I had to do was walk out, pick up the guitar and plug into the energy of the audience…
ye feckin lifted me up and send me flying thru the ballads….
its been an amazing journey since 1966….I had a cheap guitar, a sleeping bag and a desire to sing for a living….my reportoire then included Curragh of Kildare, Mary From Dungloe, Take it Down From The Mast, Galtee Mountain Boy, Spanish Lady, Follow me up to Carlow, Down By The Liffeyside, Galway Races (orig version )
i was yet to hear MacColl, Guthrie, Dylan,meet up with Hamish Imlach, Ralph McTell, hear Jeannie Robertson, The Watersons and so many others ….I was across the water yet always aware of sounds emanating from home…I always dreamt of returning which came thru in 1971

I’m not one for audio books,but was fascinated and moved by the extracts I heard by Sinead O’Connor…fortunately,’Rememberings’ is well covered on YouTube…I’ll chip away at the listening…like her singing,Sinead’s spoken voice was expressive…as are the touches of humour.

Luckily the kingdom did the business in normal time or we could have been missing one or two from the forward line !!!! Great to meet with my 4711er friends on their own patch, and get a lovely welcome. Life is good Christy 👏.

Any plans or intentions I might have regarding the set disappear completely as soon as the gig kicks off….as always I start with the same two, then the night takes on its own shape…. I had three particular songs prepared for last night…rehearsed them all week…but in the heat of the night they never emerged…next week perhaps…

It has to be said Dave…all those who have created this gig over the past 20 years have done an amazing job…to walk out on that stage last night was a truly uplifting experience….I took a walk around the site yesterday after the sound check…I got to see all the various labour intensive tasks that go into making The Big Marquee happen every Summer…hundreds of skilled people labour to create that great theatre…I first gigged for Aiken Promotions in 1972 when Planxty played the Carlton Cinema for the late Jim Aiken …54 years on Peter Aiken,his family and team continue to promote concerts and Festivals around the county…always with the highest regard for audience and artist…thats been my experience….
I enjoyed myself thoroughly last night….the audience came with me no matter where the songs led us…

The combination of Sinead’s music,her spoken word and masterclass dance was nothing less than genius…
Mixed tempo songs across a variety of genres pushed emotions to the max…and the dance techniques of the ten women artists.So much bewildering interpretive skill…
By luck,the director,Sonya Tayeh and her assistants sat right in front of me…fascinating to see their in -show emotions…and a chance for a few of us to congratulate them after the standing ovation.
The final song was Sinead with The Voice Squad…’In This Heart’…a few seconds in I felt the emotion kick in…and realised that the woman in the next seat had given up wiping her tears as they flowed…
Sadly,the only shows still to come are in the US. New York,Joyce Theater,which seems to have masterminded this scenario. Then a US tour. I’ll try and find more info about shows in Ireland and Europe
After the show,I sat in the foyer and admired photos by Kate Garner. I felt sad.. that the world had lost a true warrior woman and that I really hadn’t fully appreciated Sinead O’ Connor while she was with us

later we sang “In This Heart” together on a late late Show
later again we sang together on an RTE series…we sang along with Neil MacColl, some of his Fathers verses
lastly we duetted “Lord Baker” on her “Sean Nós” album..
each occasion joyous and memorable…..rest in peace
Paul Weller played here last night…tells me he had a cracker., he’s in Dublin tonight…..
its a great venue…Marquee on De Banks of The River Lee…over 5,000 rebels starting to filter in now…had a sound check at 5.30…lovely big cavernous vibey welcoming empty echoing tent…acoustics will soften when listeners assemble..got some long haulers in tonight, Yorkshire, Wales, Germany, USA that I know of…plus listeners from every far flung corner of the 32 counties…NO BORDER HERE TONIGHT

We are heading to the marquee again this year and it has become a lovely family tradition. Oisín Christy Kelleher is 5 and 3/4, he’s travelled all the way from Stokesly, England to be here for the 3rd year in a row! He’s here with his cousin Ruby, from out the road in Dripsey (you dedicated my little Honda 50 to her last year [which she missed cos she was in the loo]). Anyway, Oisín and Ruby are great buddies and massive fans! They are here with their parents, John, Katy, Dom and me (Christine).
They would love a shout out (hopefully Ruby will hear it this year).

Christine…the call out bag is bulging today…I’m gonna pick out a couple and , if poss, will make dedications….but I gotta prioritise the collective…over five thousand listeners in tonight…I’ll be trying to connect with each and every one….its a multi tasking situation…one which I cherish and love to fulfil….hopefully,theres gonna be between 25 and 30 songs in The Marquee tonight…some new verses, possibly a couple of new songs….tonight we’ll have thousands of people who’ve never gathered together before..this always creates a unique atmosphere that will never be replicated…
Its rewarding and exciting for me to hear that you’re fsmiy and friends are gathering tonight…happy to have your names in the “bulging bag”

Ive just checked me original copies of the albums! Wasnt “John ‘O Dreams” first released on The “High Kings of Tara” album 2 years after the release of “The Iron Behind The Velvet”. I think it was then added when the album was subsequently re-released on CD in the 90’s and a few years ago on vinyl?

“The High Kings of Tara” was a record company compilation….there were many such across the years…they don’t reckon in my list of recordings….
that said Gipp, you may be right…I dont have an original Iron Velvet vinyl and cant recall whether John O’Dreams featured…. can anyone out there provide the answer ?
some of those compilations were well collated..others down right crass …..(and the attitude of remembered execs ignorant and artless)

Mercury, Tara, Polydor, WEA,Columbia (@ Sony) Claddagh ( @ Universal) …plus Grapevine, Shanachie, and others unrecalled at the mo??
also there were few dodgy sideshows along the way, chancers taking a runner without any consideration or consultation,financial or otherwise, with the artists….I would’nt swap place with any of them….
BUT….most importantly, it has been such a privilige to sing Bill Caddick’s beautiful song…its not been in the set for years..,maybe I’ll give it a birl in Cork tonight….I clearly recall hearing Bil sing it when I guested at his Folk Club 58 years ago… a lovely man, a great songwriter and singer…

BUT….most importantly, it has been such a privilige to sing Bill Caddick’s beautiful song…its not been in the set for years..,maybe I’ll give it a birl in Cork tonight….I clearly recall hearing Bil sing it when I guested at his Folk Club 58 years ago… a lovely man, a great songwriter and singer…
