Hello Christy,
Well that’s it, I’ve committed to a folk session on 17th March. I should have a few songs on the boil by then, 11 days to go!
I’ve set my sights on
Billy Gray
The Curragh of Kildare.
Good morning Christy,
I’m in need of a miracle bigger than Knock Airport. I desperately need 2 tickets for your Belfast gig on April 3rd
If anybody has 2 tickets that they are not using, please let me know!!
Here are the reasons as to why it’s so important.
(There could even be a song in it!)
Sorry it is so long, but it needs to be.
The first time I saw you live was in Dusseldorf, Germany, I think it was 1996. You were belting out the best of your songs, facing the (very quiet) local fans in their seats. When you looked to your left, you could see (well, hear at first), a heap of about 25 Paddy’s and a few Mary’s in their early 20s had made ourselves at home.
Jumping around on the wing rattling out song after song, sure our feet hardly touched the ground.
At one point, some security bouys walked across the stage behind you and told us to sit down and be quiet. Your response to this was “Would yas feck off and leave my friends alone”
At the end of the gig, you sang the lovely Cliffs of Duneen and thanked every for coming, and as they were getting ready to go, you decided to blast out Joxer “for my friends beside me” and then came over to us for a chat, signed our tickets and thanked us for keeping you awake for the show.
That gig changed my life, and set me on course for my future. I met a girl from Cork, I liked her and she liked me, so we hauled up our anchor, moved back to Ireland, got married and added 4 to our crew.
Time passed by, we went to a few of your gigs, and loved every one of them.
So here is why your gig in April is so important, like a lot of great songs, there is a sad bit.
In September 2023, I found myself at the wrong end of a serious health issue. I found out a few days later when I woke up in ICU, I was less than 10 minutes from my permanent retirement. Recovery is very slow, but in June of last year, we were celebrating our 25th wedding, and decided to complete the circle, and go to your Belfast gig in Botanic Gardens. Everything was going great, until about ½ hour into your performance, my body didn’t want to stay, and I ended up in hospital again, apologising to my wife for missing the show. Don’t worry she said, we will go next year.
After another 2 weeks, I was good to go home again.
Nobody could see what was coming next.
Less than 2 months later, sirens and blue lights back at my house again, 2 teams of paramedics, an anesthetist and a surgeon all piled into the house.
My wife was lying on the floor after falling down the stairs. Despite all of our best efforts, she sadly passed away 5 days later, in the same ICU that had saved my life just a year previously.
She had suffered a cardiac arrest which then caused her to fall.
After her funeral service, all of the staff from Holy Trinity Primary School in Turf Lodge formed a guard of honour as we carried her out with The Voyage playing in the backround, me singing along with you.
As she was lowered down in the crematorium, I was singing it again as it played once more while her coffin disappeared out of sight. I’d lost my First Mate.
And that is why I need these tickets, I would love to bring our daughter along and tell her how I met her mother 2 years before she was even a thought.
It turns out that she loves live music too, her first ever live show was Mary Black in Beechmount at Féile an Phobail when she was only 4 weeks old!
I for any reason, anybody finds themselves with 2 tickets that they’re not using, even if it’s last minute, please let me know.
With a heavy heart I’m unable to cross the water next week for the gig in Nass on Thursday night. The eejits at Ticketmaster will it let me resell them but I am able to assign them to someone else. So if you fancy 2 x face value tickets for this sold out show on Christy’s home turf Kildare give me a shout on my email deswalker66@gmail.com
Hi Christy
As i was driving back into my beloved hometown today on my cd player came ‘where i come from’.
You and your brother’s wonderful song resonates with me, to different settings, about my town/homeplace.
I adore the song’s imagery, heart and feeling. I tried, probably 8 years ago, to visit the yellow bog/hill of allen but struggled to find a way on to the land ( without local knowledge). Is the nearby Bog Museum still open?
Rory

I recorded the song you mentioned for an RTE Prog some years back…it was truly memorable occasion…must try and track it down and view it again
A great tribute to Tommie for sure. Great to have been in that special room last night.
If ye do ever get the “band” back together it will be an evening not to be missed.
Sligo is indeed a major hub for good music.
Christy's reply
Some lovely sounds emanated from our set….always a great buzz to play with Seamie O’Dowd, ( Seamie has played beautifully on recent albums..most recently on “Lemon Sevens” on the last album “Terrible Beauty)”
Gerry Grennan really solid and tasty, (we used to gig together in Rakish Paddy’s in Lanesboro in the late 1970s, (back then Gerry was in a great Band called JARGON with Charlie McGettigan who went on to win the Eurovision with “Rock & Roll KIds” )
Jessie Whitehead an exciting musician emerging….I’ve been aware of Jessie since she was born…Her Dad is Dickon , we have worked together on & off for 30 years or more, …
I loved the 4 voices melding, when the two fiddles joined on McIlhatton I was smitten… I gotta try and play with these troubadours again…lets see what happens
Thanks C for such a complete gig last night, it had everything. You solo then being joined by great Trad and contemporary guests, Jessie , Seamie & Gerry. A meaningful and carefully curated setlist for a good cause all in an intimate setting. Well done all involved it meant a lot to so many people in that Community on so many levels. For the night that was in it, I was joined by Séamíe O’Dowd, Gerry Grennan and Jessie Whitehead…..Rob McNab kicked it off by introducng Tommy Kelly who gave a hearfelt and heartwarming oration…Tommy K. a lifelong pal of Tommy G.
travelled from Munich to remember his friend……I sang for a while before being joined by the Sligo Trio, we gelled grand despite little rehearsal..
I hope we get to gell again
You are right Christy, dem boyos can sure rattle out a tune.
Back in the day when I was hanging on to the shirttails of the bould Seoirse Ó Dochartaigh (I could drive, he couldn’t) I was lucky to be at many a session, official and unofficial, some all night long ..and among others Huidi Beags pub in Bunbeg was a favourite. I was lucky enough to be in there to hear Arty and Cathal, in the company of Ciarán Ó Tourish, and many others including Mairéad, n the days before Altan became organised, they all just played and played and played…..
Christy's reply
you remind me of the all-nighters
a chosen few got the nod to hold back for the lock-in
drink began to flow, good sense began to ebb, harbored resentments to rise as wallets emptied
you could drink yourself sober and then stupid again
once, emerging at dawn, into a sun drenched morning, Barney remarked “there’s a great stretch in the evenings”
Apologies if this has been asked of you before but is there a likelihood that you’ll be gigging again in the UK? It feels like an absolute age since we last saw you here after making a habit of it every 18 months or so for a time. If it’s not in the stars then I think I’ll have to be making my way over the Irish Sea before long to catch you again.
Secondly, a track on Sam Fender’s new album titled “Crumbling Empire” jumped out to me on its first spin as something I could hear you delivering beautifully. I suspect the queue in the jukebox as you once put it is full up but I hope curiosity leads you to listening to it at the very least. He’s really got to grips with just how desperate the UK can feel to many, some things never change.
All the best

Arty & Cathal were brotherly friends , both hewn from the solid rock of Tír Eogan

Well Christy. It’s been a while and I’m still here shackled behind that wall. Dad died a year ago today. I said goodbye a few weeks before, then I watched the service on video. Not proud of that. It’s my lady I worry for. Her mums gone 2 yrs. She has yet to face it. Ah but wait our life is good. Our boys are thriving. Mum came to visit. She’s strong, so strong. Keep singing Christy. Keep singing

Hi Christy
Found a great bbc iplayer documentary about the great Alan Hull.
Sam fender does a good job of looking through his past inc sting, costello and rab noakes ( i see one of rab’s was on the first Lindisfarne album) . Great band, wonderful songwriter, colourful man.
Did you ever play on a bill with Alan Hull?
Rory
Ps have a feeling dagrab might have mentioned this before.
Christy's reply
Never met the good man
way way back I was staying at Torbane nr Kircaldy….there was a community of musicians based there….I may have met a member of early Lindisfarne there…
Hello Christy,
If I can get anywhere near your speed and accuracy on the fretboard I will be a happy girl.
Plenty of time, as you said. Doesn’t feel like it though.
I’ve got better since I said I had 2 1/2 chords. Not sure I’m anywhere near Gipp’s 7 yet, when thinking about useability.
Here’s where I’m at
C. Not bad. Needs to be faster
D. OK. Muscle memory is on the way
D min. Pretty inaccurate
E. OK
E min. Good
F. Slow but I’ve worked out one I can do
G. Mostly OK
A. Mostly OK
A min. OK
B min. pretty inaccurate
How many’s that? If we count them all as one to be very generous. 10. But 5 that I’m reasonably happy with.
And 120 at least, with the capo!
The Oscar film world ignored the merits of the Dylan biopic.. as a Dylan addict/one who was initially ambivalent about the film,my view is still fair play to all concerned…it’s a terrific watch and listen…
Have a good day

Myself and all of my family are big fans of yours. We are regulars in Vicar street every January and we also always go to the Slieve Russell shows in Cavan as we live nearby.
With regard to the upcoming Slieve Russell show on the 20 March I know you have a hat you sometimes pick a few requests from so I would love if you would give a shout out to my grandmother Gretta Donohoe who will be attending and who is 91 years of age. She has a big family of 10 children, 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She would love if you could sing her favourite song of yours – My little Honda 50 – as she drove a moped until recently around the country and this song always reminded her of spinning around corners on her rapid and nifty bike.
Looking forward to the show and keep doing what you are doing you make a lot of people very happy.
