Christy hi
I had a notion for some Colm Mac Con Iomaire today so The River Holds Its Breath is currently washing over me.
Have you worked with this brilliant composer/musician, i imagine you will have?
Thanks rory
Christy's reply
Never had the pleasure of playing with Colm….but whoever made time made plenty of it
Hello Christy,
Well since Saturday I’ve been trying to perfect Jack Doyle as best as I can, I have the chords nailed down.. I have found most songs I can easily remember the few chords in them however my voice isn’t the best but it’s enough to make my grandparents happy when I sing for them. I have began to learn the finger style and I have one strumming method for it that works on most songs, but I need to figure out other patterns for Beeswing and Only our rivers… both songs well known. Might upload a clip sometime.
I have your book on the way now, looking forward to having a good read.
I have my leaving results tomorrow I’ll be in touch..
Christy's reply
I passed the leaving in 1963..5 passes, two failures…the Ma gave me a red 10/= note ( ten shillings) which bought me four pints of Guinness @ 2/6 a pint in Hugh Neeson’s pub ,Main St , Newbridge.. A ballad session ensued, we sang “A Nation Once Again”, “Kevin Barry” and “If I were a Blackbird”….the ball was in , the game was on…
PS…I should add that my youthful drinking led to nothing but waste, shame, ill health and despair…I dont recommend it….life and time are such precious things….wishing you well Matty
Hello Christy,
Thankyou for talking about your process with the guitar and songs. There’s something very reassuring reading someone’s feelings and experiences when they match your own.
When I started the harp it was because I wanted to by musically self-sufficient, I wanted to be able to put a whole song across all by myself.
Your experience sounds like it matches mine.
For me, it became clear very quickly that if I gave any of my brain to the harp, there wasn’t going to be enough of it left to spend on the song. So it had to become automatic on the harp, it has to play itself.
So it’s all down to patterns and repetition. Muscle memory, as you said, a while ago.
No chance of every being able to play a tune on the harp, that would be far too random for my brain to cope with.
So now I’m doing exactly the same thing with the guitar. Patterns, shapes, repetition like a meditation. I love how it sounds.
I’m hoping, give it a few months and I’ll be able to let go of the brain and use that for the song.
You wouldn’t believe how useful and reassuring you comment was. I need to thank you for it from my heart.
We are very much looking forward to seeing you for the first time in Bundoran Sept 26. We built our 35th Wedding Anniversary Trip pretty much around this date. Your song The Voyage, which we heard performed in Dublin by a band in our only time in Ireland, moved us and we became fast fans after that. During Covid, we played it for our family on FaceBook Live as part of our weekly stay in touch sessions with our 5 children and their families. It would be very wonderful if you played it on Sept 26th. Looking forward to this time!
Christy's reply
It will be my pleasure MaryAnn
I recorded The Voyage in 1989 and it has become very popular. with generations of songsters and listeners…The song was written by Johnny Duhan, one of our most popular songwriters…it was a good day when Johnny allowed me to record his song 35 years ago..
Hi Christy.. great to hear the stellar feedback from your Wexford gig..looking forward to hearing the new songs. To follow up on Hilary’s comment, Nell McCafferty did get a mention in an older version of “Delerium Tremens” that some will remember. I saw Mary Kenny pay tribute to her online this morning; “A wonderful person, an iconic figure in the Irish feminist movement, brilliant, funny, an amazingly fine writer and altogether unforgettable”.
“I dreamt of Nell McCafferty and Mary Kenny too.. the things that we got up to.. but I’m not going to tell you..” (Del Trems)
Christy's reply
I think I was in a Jacuzzi with Alice Glenn on that verse….the local parish Priest read me off the altar..recent verses included plugs for Heat Retention grants and Gay Conversion Therapy
There were magic nights in the opera house, memories were made and moments created atmospheres like non other. John of Dreams for that gentlemen was a beautiful request and an impressive performance having little time to practice Christy. The voyage had to have been one of the most crowd supported ballads I’ve ever seen. And of course I should thank your voice on singing the Contender (Jack Doyle) for myself, was nearly in tears C, the story on top of it created an emotional scene. I was up the front few rows and it changed my perspective from when I was down the back in Lyrath, could hardly see you there. Glad to see it going as strong as ever.
Christy's reply
Good man Matty..what songs are you working on now ?
Hi I know this is off topic but I see Nell Mc Cafferty has passed away, may her rest be peaceful. She fought the good fight not just for women but against all sorts of injustice and with great humour, she was very funny. She was not one dimensional, I hope they will replay some of her reports from Italy on the football. Her book on The Kerry Babies case showed up the horror and the double standards. Her Memoir makes fascinating reading as were her reports from the Courts. We need leaders and journalists like Nell even more than ever before, her take on recent court cases would have been insighful, I have no doubt. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Christy's reply
RIP Nell McCafferty…..Daughter of Derry, Activist, Feminist, Socialist, Nell has maintained an important presence here for manys the longday….her courtroom reports back in the 70’s and 80s were compelling ….just this morning I’m reading about Nell in “Rita, A Memoir” recently published by Greenisland Press, Belfast..this good book outlines the life of the late Rita O’Hare…I recommend this book along with any of Nell’s publications….essential reading for anyone interested in the recent History of Ireland
PS

Hello Christy,
Like Moeke, I also wish I’d been at the Wexford gig. I’m on the mend, back working today, from the sofa on a laptop and I’m very happy to be coming out the other end of the covid. I’d avoided it for 4 years, guess it was bound to catch me eventually.
I’m working hard on the finger picking, watched the job of songs again yesterday. There’s a clip of your brother’s finger picking on there. Something to aspire to. Also get a good view of your shiny nails flashing away from the front row.
The book I’ve got has set John Barleycorn as its first full piece to learn. It’s been on my list to sing for a few years, and here it is, waiting for me. I’ve had to drop it a fifth but it’s going ok now it’s in a key I can sing.
My husband and I are celebrating are 10th anniversary by travelling from Derry to Galway for your concert in Salthill. We are both big fans of ours and ‘Joxter’ playing made us start a conversation one night and as they say….the rest is history. We have seen you numerous times and both Joxter and the voyage were part of our wedding day. It would be lovely if you could give us a shout out in Galway as a surprise and anniversary present for my husband, Liam. Our friends will also be there, we call the group the ‘Christy Crew’.
