Hi Christy
Hope all going well and that you had good crack at RTE Towers for the radio show.
Very often my computer has trouble accessing radio shows etc,so if any readers could post a link it would be greatly appreciated.I’m especially keen to hear a new, much raved about, song.
Hope to see you in Buxton.Only October but have the snow chains ready for the van’s Firestones just in case……..
The man of new October takes the reins
And early frost is on his shoulder…..
or a Buxton blizzard!
Cheers,Dave

That Radio show is now scheduled for next Saturday Morning…..we’ll post a link in due course….I think I played a Folk Club in Buxton in 1968..often traversed the old road between Manchester and Sheffield…played Macclesfield, Hyde,Penistone, Bakewell.Chapel-en-le-Frith…remember a great Sat night Summer Outing organized by Mike Harding somewhere “Up Top” with Tom & Smiley, Marie Little,The Beggarmen and a bus load of thirsty ducks hell bent on drinkin pub dry
Now what a mighty two day gig that was. It was baking hot and I never saw so many pasty but bright red sunburned Irishmen in one place in my life. A whole shed load had made the trip to NYC and it was two days to remember with a stellar lineup (see below). It was June 14th and 15th 1997. Irish music Royalty was in the house for those two days. PLEASE consider coming back to the USA, if you don’t like planes, there are always Cruise Liners and you could easily do 10 nights in Boston and NYC alone! Please think about it………we’d love to see you again on this side of the big pond!

thanks for that..some line up…Vince Power certainly knew how to put a gig together…I hear loose talk about a trip over..who knows?
Was watching and listening to Mick Blake’s “Oblivious” and it made me think of Thomas Kent, one of 2 men excecuted outside of Dublin in 1916 for defending their country. He is rightly being given a state funeral in Castlelyons on 18th September and being recognised for his role along with the other brave men and women for his efforts to free his country, looking forward to hearing you again sing “Oblivious” on Saturday on Marion Finucan.
Christy's reply
I passed Ceannt Barracks in The Curragh Camp recently and thought of this verse from Mick Blakes song
“Back in the day we had men of esteem
risking their lives for a National dream
one hundred years later, what was it all for.
Hear their voices resounding
calling to me and to you
all they dreamt of and died for
has been squandered by scoundrels and fools,
is this the best we can do….
what will it take to make us angry,
where is the line that cant be crossed
we’ve been sold out, taken in,yet blindly
we’ll do it all again, fuel that gravy train……
Oblivious, its like we’re Oblivious”
Of course it’s the brilliant Declan, not Dermot! Funny thing though, I saw both of you separately in Phase 1 (the Students Union Building) at what was then the NEW University Of Ulster in Coleraine in the early seventies in Horslips and Planxty, respectively. You were both brilliant then and neither of you have lost a step!
Christy's reply
I recall that gig in Coleraine, either ’72 or ’73……Planxty played that night with a youthful John Martyn who mesmerised us with his beautiful music…..later we were stopped at a road block manned by the Ulster Defence Regiment (1970-1992). At least one of them was a drunken uniformed lout who was most unhappy at the sight of our “fenian” licence plates….we were very relieved to get through….John was very unsettled by the experience as were the rest of us…..Thankfully, we live more peaceful times in Northern Ireland….just home from 3 days gigging in Belfast, Derry and Bellaghy…no site nor sound of a British Soldier nor Armed Peeler
Holy Pilgrimage! So Christy, we came to Ireland to celebrate the 70th birthday of Van the Man on Cyprus Avenue. Fascinating that two of my ultimate musical heroes were born exactly the same year (so belated happy birthday wishes to you too). As soon as I knew we were coming I contacted the Queen of Kerry, that Bright Blue Rose, Hilary Scanlan, to find out if you were gigging in between the Van Morrison concerts at Slieve Donard and Cyprus Avenue. Once we heard you were, albeit a little ways away from our planned itinerary, there was no decision to be made and we drove from Donegal Town to Tralee for the first night and to Glengarrif from Tralee and back on the second night with that Kerry tour guide par excellence, that very same Hilary. She also managed to help us get great seats for both shows, a real treat. In the US the great seats go to scalpers before the great unwashed (moi) have a chance to get them. We were blessed to attend two sumptuous, magnificent shows! You and the boys killed it both nights but they were so different in nature (and content) that our decision to come was vindicated in spades. You were on fire both nights and we couldn’t have asked for more, yet I did. I requested Fairytale of New York (out of season as you so rightly pointed out ) and you graciously delivered. I was in heaven. Thanks so much for two great concerts and my song. You, Dermot and Jimmy were the icing on the cake of our 12 day sojourn to the oul’ sod! Ride on.
Yours sincerely and appreciatively,
The Fairytale Man, Brian
Christy's reply
Thanks for sharing your journey with us Brian….you surely traversed the Island to hear the songs…North South East and West…..your request for Fairytale (McGowan/Finer) could’nt have come at a better time…I love to sing that song…it always carries me away to Randall’s Island and many places far beyond…somehow that night it led me to Burning Times. Written by Charlie Murphy of California I had not sung it for a few years until, suddenly, it appeared in The Eccles,Glengarriff….between the mountains and the sea
Sorry Patsy but even that won’t work for the Irish team. I tried to get Christy to come and sing the national anthem live in NZ for the last world cup but he wouldn’t so we all know what happened! Go the ABs. Still gonna make it to see you live Christy and still loving your music.
Christy's reply
Jean, better get the finger out..this tour is not going to last forever…hope we all have a great World Cup….hoping to see some great games..The AB’s, as always,
looking favourites but they have been there before….great fan of AB Rugby but we live in hope down here…..I had a great experience singing to our squad 2 nights ago..met up with a few AB legends too
What a way to send the Irish team off to the World Cup, with your sweet notes ringing in their ears.. I’m sure each and every one of them really appreciated it.
Mr Schmidt really is the ultimate Manager……Hopefully they can go on and do the business…..and who knows, but maybe another “Joxer” could be born !!!!
Ride onn.

Henshaw is a fair old Box player..we tore into a few jigs..you should have seen Paulie and DEVON dancin a slip Jig. Sean O’Brien sang some sweet harmonies on The Honda 50….he dont milk, he’s a beef to the heel man….Rob Kearney sang well on Merseyside, Rala on Contender….Luke called for the Road Road..when I asked for requests there was a call out for Garth Brooks…fuck that sez I ! a great gaggle of men…they gave a great welcome to myself Mick and Johnny…I finished up with North and South of The River…these lads certainly unite the Island every time they run out to play…
I´ve just want to say thank you for all the wondeful gigs I was enjoying over the years.I´ve seen you in Berlin 3 times, Letterkenny and Athlone, just to mention a few. I´m sorry that I won´t be able to visit one of your gigs in September, even though I´m in Ireland at the time.Maybe it will work out next year.
Many greetings from Berlin!

thank you for listening and writing….hope you have a good trip
A mighty couple of nights we had in The Kingdom and the Rebel. Two beautiful settings for a gig. Hot and high energy in Ballyroe and a kind of calm elegance easing into a beautiful gig in Glengarriff . Two gigs …three wizards . . . and audiences captivated on both nights.
There can,t be many drives in the country to compare with going through Molls Gap into Kenmare and on to Glengarriff…. Gers nerves were well shot by the time we landed at the Eccles Hotel but the journey was worth it just to hear you sing ” the First Time ever I saw your Face” and sure it’s never too early in the year for a Fairytale or a Folktale , both perfect.
Thanks to all involved….If Carlsberg did tour guides there,d only be one Rose for the job !!!
Christy's reply
we left Tralee on Sat, I was looking forward to the spin for tis surely one of the most beautiful journeys, I shut my eyes as we skirted Killarney and did not wake up til Glengarriff…I missed it all ( the rugby match on the radio too!)
Thanks for a fantastic nite in Glengarriff last nite .Another night to remember.A great crowd super sound and a music Icon. What more could we ask for .Thanks again Christy.
Many thanks for a cracking night in Glengarriff.Everyone had a great evening. First time we’ve seen you live, definitely not the last. See you again soon!
Christy, I was most disappointed to miss you all at Glengariff. I see you were fab. We have just returned from 4 days in Clare to see John Prine in Ennis. We travelled the length and breadth from Kilrush to Lahinch and Gort, with a short sojourn to Galway city and Salthill where we attempted to promenade in spite of ourselves. 🙂 John Prine was himself and the same as when I saw him at the Finsbury Fleadh many years ago. His solo Sam Stone was very moving. As he does not play often we were very lucky to see him in Ennis. Glor is a lovely venue and the audience very appreciative and respectful. I hope you are having a glorious summer. xx

happy travels Anuk…John is a great troubadour who deserves all the respect and love that flows his way….
Thanks for dedicating Black is the Colour to Sally Anne and great gig, we’re both hero’s tonight! Enjoy the bridal suite!

I love that Hotel…like a relic of auld decency…they knew where to build them…all the prime sites….the Earl of Bantry probably supped a few sherries here on the way out to his “hunting” lodge …that was a grand gathering last night…listeners in from New York, Germany, Newport, Moulnaskehagh, Ballylickey, Allahies,Tralee, Clonakilty,Rathoora,Donegal, The Shortgrass,….it was a rare thing to finish a gig with “Burning Times”, to hear soft and gentle singing on the chorus “Isis,Astarte,Diana, Hecati,Demeter,Kali, Inarna” ….great requests too..”Folktale” from Germany, “Black Colour” from Wales, “Fairytale” from New York with my Brother Andy’s voice ringing out in the room… then into the Van and we bate it back to Bertigrad to shout for the Lily Whites in Croke Park, the echo of the gig still ringing in my ears… “If I get an encore, I go home feeling like a King”
Two great nights under the belt. Heading home hoarse, happy and grateful for the honour of playing to such tuneful and appreciative listeners
Thanks again, the lyrics in Oblivious ring true to what has gone on in this country over the last few years. I have checked out Mick Blake’s video on YouTube, was unreal to hear you singing it with such passion!
Christy's reply
Good on you Ado, keep coming back, and tell ’em all in Castlelyons that we were askin for ’em….Watergrasshill, Rathcormack,Fermoy….watch out for the Bailiffs……Did Flatley ever get the Rhino Horn back?
Thanks to all of ye for a great night last night in Tralee, and again in Fermoy 2 weeks ago. Best of luck in Glengariff tonight.
Loved the Contender, and Oblivious, along with everything else. We’re ye recording a DVD last night?
Christy's reply
there is a documentary being filmed about the songs…it will be an ongoing process over the coming months…there may very well be a DVD as well depending on how it all emerges …you are the first one to comment on Mick Blake’s song “Oblivious” which we are now covering…Ive been invited to sing it on “The Marian Finucane” next Sat morning on RTE Radio 1…..I’m looking forward to that…Mick Blake is a brilliant song writer , check him out on YouTube…
Dear Christy, thank you for returning to Tralee and for such a powerful performance, paying tribute to Christie Hennessy, both his work and his fine statue and including the songs like Casey and Brendan Voyage that represent who we are, as well as the references to our sporting heroes. You know your audiences so well and know how to reach out and make those relevant and local connections with your listeners. Bright Blue Rose was very special. Haste ye back. Go raibh mile, mile maith agat. Beir bua agus beannacht. H

Great to have found a room in Tralee where the gig is welcomed……that was a great audience last night and the family who run Ballyroe Heights could not have been more accomodating.Does anyone recall the Anti-Nuclear Roadshow coming to Tralee in 1979 ?
