Have to agree with you there Christy, injuries usually occurs with these money making games,Plenty of spinach will keep you’re strengh up, You will be able to lift the bull with one hand and stop George north in his tracks with the other hand,Ride on.
I’m just back from a holiday back over the water. As a Cork fan, least said about the double humiliation at Thurles the better, but well done to Kildare for that one (though I’m sure the Kerry game has now been erased from your memory). Anyway, in the car back up to Maynooth on the Sunday, we went through Newbridge, stopping off to have a look at Moorefield & Newbridge Town grounds; very impressed. We obviously passed by The Curragh, though it was almost impossible to see for the rain…
Anyway, looking forward to seeing you at Gateshead Sage on 26/10. It’s the day after a Newcastle v sunderland game; the last time you played The Sage, 1/11/10 was also the day after a Tyne / Wear Derby. Hoping for another 5-1 win & also “Spancill Hill”…..
Hi Christy, was it you talking to my wife on Sunday morning in Phoenix Park while watching our lad’s band, the 45s? They played at Whelan’s that night and went down a storm. The lads have fallen in love with Dublin and are looking to come back in September.
All the best
Bill
Christy's reply
Morra Bill….The thing about baldy auld fellas is that a lot of us look the same…as we cling to the mortal coil we opt for similar comfy, easy-to-get-on (and off) clobber, some of us follow the new young bands, some of us try to keep nostrils, earholes and eyebrows trimmed as out pates become even shinier….I’ve only been to The Phoenix Park once this year with my eldest son and grandson, we went to the aZoo to see the Elephant and the Kangaroo…if I ever do meet your wife ,I’ll be more then happy to talk to her….I fell in love with Dublin in 1963 and have been coming back ever since
twas with gr8 delight that I read of ur mid-august gig n fermoy and as its the only time i get a good craic at life back on the emerald isle i usually dont get to see u giggin anymore as im livin ere on quinta brigada land the past 6 years… so without consultin the cailin thats now by my side,, (Lucia was fast asleep after her arrival from work) i duly booked us in… We all need holidays but jaysus am i glad ur playin while im ar ais aris, herself has been nigh on 3months tryin to pronounce Lisdoonvarna and many mini phonics lessons later I thinks she finally gettin it so if ur do play it on the 15th n fermoy if ya remember la chica lucia it wud make her holiday christy… meanwhile il be doin my utmost to get a picture with ya..good luck with the bank holiday baladeerin señor…. If your at nothing there this evening Christy you should pop down to scariff with Luka on the main stage tonight
Christy's reply
“at nothin” sez foley and him below in Scariff between stages….Scariff is it?…myself and Luka played together in The Merriman Tavern way back in 1978 and us out on the road with Noel Hill, Tony Linnane,Gabriel McKeon and Andy Irvine…knockin spots off the ballads and the corners off tunes….our hosts were the late Aiden O’Beirne and Síle, agus sí bhean an tí, gan dabt ag éinne
its been a long day here in Bertigrad…we had to scrape our lads off the Park today after the Kerrymen were finished with them but they’ll be grand in a few days time when they get back to the healing Plains…our minors are still in with a shout and Luka is giving his full support
I was in the bed with the cocoa when I read your invite to Scariff….I’ve an early start in the morning to head to The Rebel to record a song with my Producer…there are no Bank Holidays for balladeers
Does he need lifting,he seems to keep jumping higher without assistance.
Christy's reply
Without assistance you say !! my back is nearly broke from liftin that big Limerick hoor and him drippin with dairy product …The Bull had to sell off all his suck calves just to keep Paulie in milk….I’m not too keen on these pre World Cup “friendlies”…they clash with The Ash
Yes Hil, I would dearly love to hear ‘Celestial Soda Pop’ being played as an intro to a gig once again…every time I play it here at home it just brings me back to a different time and style of gigs on the never ending tour. I still believe at about 1 minute and 18 seconds in to the song is when Christy would walk out on the stage, the crowd had already =started the hand clap along to the piece as a bowran joined in the piece…it was pure magic to hear as the lights went down, and the sound of Ray Lynch’ piece started up…goosebumps…I know it will happen….for I have been told that someday, somewhere, some gig…whows where, who knows when…but it’ll happened… do do do do do do do , do do do….do do do..
Christy's reply
Hey Lar…you are fairly puttin it up to me there , me auld linnet
At this point Christy. I’ve been dirty, I’ve been clean. There’s no worse position than being caught between. I’ve been a coward, I’ve been a queen. It’s time now for me to make a difference. Not gonna lie, I’m drunk, but I’m full of fire, if that’s a mistake, it will be worth it. There isn’t a performer/singer alive who I appreciate who hasn’t come from a similar position who I appreciate. I love ye Christy. But I’m going all in. Never had help from anyone. And I can sing the heart out of anything I believe in. For me, you’re the greatest, and anyone who you were in possible in competition with has long since bitten the dust. You are in your prime. Those who have burnt brightly have since extinguished their flame. For me, you are the greatest, you have won in life. But I must make my own mistakes, and I make no apologies for it. I continue to learn from a great like yourself, but I fear destruction. You are the greatest Christy. Thank you. I hope to share music one day. I am at once both failing and succeeding, but iit’s what I’m familiar with and it will do. See ye soon!
Christy's reply
Thanks Dylan, thanks for the reminder….I recognise what you share from my younger life all those years ago…I really believed in my “fire”, in my own power…thats the way I lived and played until the day came when I was rendered powerless, unable to talk, to sing, to even think straight….thats what it took before I found the courage to reach out…….. ( an act which I always thought to be a sign of weakness…but which turned out to be my saving grace)….thanks for the good words of praise Dylan… but without the love, power and inspiration of those around me, my wee flame would long since have been quenched…I could not, cannot, will never be able to do it alone….
That said Dylan, I wish you the very best in all you do…Sing Out!…as Pete Seeger exhorts
Looking forward to the game next Saturday Christy,Warm up before the world cup,We have a few injured players before we start,But George north and halfpenny are ready for the green army ?.
No gigs for a few weeks so our thoughts turn to a trip (hopefully a few trips) to Croke Park. Galway will give us plenty of trouble. Think I’m gonna stay overnight and catch the Kingdom and Kildare on the Sunday and maybe first half of the dubs game. Hopefully there might be an auld sing-song in a pub somewhere in Dublin on Sat night.
What was the name of the tune that Christy used as an intro back in the day, sounded a bit like the into to Blondie song “Call Me” and i think was played on keyboard

Celestial Soda Pop – Ray Lynch
Thats going back a bit..well remembered..it was nice to hear it again…I ran out of the room thinking it was show time
Hi. I thought that article by Darragh was more about Dublin than Kerry,, we probably all read things differently,,,, (like being at our own individual gigs ?? ), As Shakespeare said ” by indirections find directions out ” maybe the sub text was about An Riocht and the Lily Whites,,,anyway its all good,, getting the tickets, planning the journey, the parking, where to eat, where to meet people, what weather to prepare for, not to mention the football itself and the buzz,,,,there is nothing like it,, safe travelling all… H
Christy's reply
He was ,of course, referring to Dublin but we will use even the slightest opportunity to raise our hopes as we face the might of Kerry. Just as I remember our own great players ( not a medal between them) I also recall seeing Mick O’Connell soar, Tadghie Lyons badger,Mikey Sheehy feint, Bomber bury, Paudie harangue and harass,Gooch mesmerize,…the list is endless…. we have our own legends in Kildare but sadly, in my lifetime, not many achieved fame nor notoriety outside the County …Larry McCormack,Jimmy Cummins, Nuxer Buckley, Boiler White, Michael Geraghty, Paddy Gibbons, Ray Swan, Jimmy Dowling, Shay Cash, Johnny Doyle,Sos Dowling,Seamie Harrison, Davy Dalton,Harry Fay ( ex Wicklow) Paddy Anderson,Frank White,Liam Casey,The Rubber Keogh,Dinny Craddock, Skinner Behan,Johnny Gibson, Miko Doyle, Jimmy McDermot,Jack McKenna,Pat Dunny, Kevin Kelly,Larry Tomkins,Shay Fahy (Cork medalists but ex Lilys))
Hi All,,,, Yes condolences to Lizzy on the passing of her mother,,,,, California is a long way from Dublin,,,,,, The Folkfest in Killarney was really, really wonderful, well done to all involved,,, a stellar line up for sure, lets hope it will become an annual fixture,,,,Luka opened proceedings on Fri by invovling the listeners and encouraging them to gather up close to the stage,,,the M O C band played a grand set on Sat afternoon,,,, and he joined with Mick Hanly as special guests with Moving Hearts on the Fri,, there were 30 acts featuring maybe 180 musician,, many of whom stayed around and mingled,,,it was pure joy to be there,,,,are you singing a few songs for the Fermanagh boys before they meet the boys in blue Christy ?,,,,, its a busy weekend in Croker,,, looking forward to great sporting games,,,, Beir bua. Christy's reply
I love this time of year as both Gaelic and Hurling Championships start to peak…to be in the last 8 adds greatly to the commotion….I see Marc O’Sé in the Irish Times today remarking how difficult it is for players to prepare mentally for games they are certain to win!!! I hope the Kildare lads read that!….Delighted to hear that Killarney went so well… Gleneagles has long since been a favourite venue for me…first gigged there nearly 40 years ago….used to sleep up on Mangerton after the early gigs….watched the Gleneagles TV Show last week….Fintan O’Toole gave it a right auld lash…..
I’ll be on the Hill come Sunday, hopefully buoyed up by a good result from the Minors on Sat evening. Its quiet and very wet up here in Fermanagh. Its a beautiful County. They have their work cut out but they too will be riled by
Ó Sé’s casual remarks. Is he lining himself up for Pat Spillane’s chair in the commentary box? Both of them have fairly earned their spurs.
I came home for my mother’s funeral, so it wasn’t exactly a holiday. I did get to climb Croagh Patrick on Sunday, despite the ban. We were half way down to Westport when we heard it had been cancelled but decided to go on and suss out what was happening. The weather was better when we arrived, the welcoming party was there as usual with the lemonade and the holy books wishing us well, and up we went. It was wet and windy and slippery, but it was grand. Now I’m on the way out again, but hopefully I’ll get to a gig next time I’m here. I got to a few matches when I was at home, and Tyrone are still hanging in there (barely). Wishing Kildare luck this weekend as well. All the best to you.
Christy's reply
you certainly had a full schedule on your visit….safe journey back to the far west…we’re in Fermanagh for a few days…its easy to understand why they have so many lakes….
Feel like an idiot now not accepting your message. But I needed to knuckle down… Picked up a painting job with the pops & America is less than a month away. I’m back drinking, never trust meself on the gargle, but I’m back on it… Gonna print up this gig I reckon. Keep well Christy, yer a gent & a true musical hero. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6hgYUOPmMo

the gargle can be a devious, cunning, baffling and extremely powerful comrade….a great convincer, it can present itself as ones vital muse, as the one who understands, as the great comforter….for decades I lay intoxicated by its heady spell…..underneath all the denial and subterfuge I was slowly dying…. I hope that gargle proves to be different for you…….sometimes I happen upon old recordings that were made when I was drunk or stoned or both….hearing them hurts….I now realize the extent of my delusion……mind yourself and best wishes to you upon your journey
The Clancy Brothers appeared to be a big influence when you started playing music. I was listening to the interview you done on a fantastic BBC radio show called Desert Island Discs and you chose “Brennan on the Moor” as one of your favorites. I won the Clancy Brothers Song Writing Competition last month out of 125 entried and I’d love you to listen to my winning entry. You mention that you are always looking for new music and that its important to be able to tell a story if you want to be a successful folk musician. I’ll let you decide if I achieved thisI suppose. It would mean a great deal to me if you listened to it
I love your music! Any chance you’ll ever get down here to New Zealand to play? We would love to have you!
