Hi Christy. I was all set to join the brothers (Paul & Tomás) for our annual outing to hear you sing last Tuesday in Vicar St. We were all really looking forward to it. As pure bad luck would have it, I came down with a flu-ish viral dose over the weekend. The upshot was I was at home resting then while the brothers sang along with Ordinary Man, among many other songs I’m sure. Tomás mentioned Ordinary Man in particular to me as it makes frequent appearances in any family sing songs we have. I’m grand again now and hopefully will be able to catch your next visit to Vicar St. Take it easy, Ciaran.
Christy's reply
glad that you are back up and ready for action…let me know if you were unable to use your ticket and we’ll sort something out
How’s things,
Delighted to see you are playing Loughrea Hotel next week since it’s my local town. The wife got me tickets for the Birthday so we are all set, making the sandwiches and the flask of tae as we speak!! Seen you recently in Castlebar….I think those tickets were the Christmas present!! A big follower down through the years whenever you, Deccie and the recent crew are playing around Galway/Mayo.
Jimmy Higgins played with a band called Tailors Twist for our wedding in Achill a few years back. I was hoping you could play a request (The Voyage) for the lead man in that band, Gerry Barrett, who is recovering from a lung transplant. I often sang this song with his band at local gatherings down through the years. His family are also big fans and will be there in force to make sure Jimmy is keeping time on the night!
I have also chanced singing a few of your other songs at weddings, fleadhs and massage parlour opening events down through the years; The Voyage, City of Chicago and Joxer to mention a few. The uncle sings My Little Honda 50 and the cousin trys Lawless from time to time. If any of these make the hymn sheet on the night all the better!
I lost my father (Johnny Geraghty Senior) in a work accident a few years back so if you could sing January Man in his memory since his birthday is in January and he was a man for all seasons so a fitting song. He got me into singing from an early age….The Oulde Cow from Scarriff was one of the first songs he had me learn!
My friend Miley Kelly (another big fan) and a gang of us always go see you whenever he is home from Australia. A big thanks for playing requests for him, we get a big kick out of that!
Anyway looking forward to another great night and many more to come.
All the best,
John G

fair play Johnny, thats Loughrea sorted…we’ll do our best to deliver
Hi Christy,Great show you did in Youghal, a legend you are. Im not sure if you heard the new folk song called The Ballad of the Mary Russell, Its a true storey.Based on the book, The Ship of Seven Murders
A True Story of Murder & Madness
By Alannah Hopkin, Kathy Bunney ..
I know you will love it,when you hear it.. Would love to hear you sing this one in the near future, Kind regards Mick.
Christy's reply
thanks for sharing…have a lot of songs on the bench at the moment..fully occupied for the near future but I’lltry and check it out
Thanks Christy I will certainly give ‘The Farmer’ another crack, maybe the newer version.. the After the break version I think I’d need another set of hands and a lend of Andy Irvine’s brain for a couple of hours.
As regards The Master and Hattie Carroll, I find it worth reminding meself every now and then that he wrote it aged around 22 or so.. stops ye gettin notions. Thanks again, keep the sweet music rollin on
Had the pleasure of seeing you with the folks and the wife in Vicar St last night. A fantastic night was had by all, I was delighted to hear ‘The Pursuit of Farmer Michael Hayes’ a song I have tried on three occasions to learn and managed to fail at it four times. Another highlight for me was ‘The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll’,a song that’s like getting a full force sliotar straight in the gut, it winds you for a bit but hardens you up I suppose, or gives you a hernia, not sure. Anyway thanks again for a brilliant night
Christy's reply
Keep bangin out The Farmer…no scivin…its a hard one to pin down…the Planxty version was hard to nail..I had trouble playing on it myself..the recent version is relatively straightforward …..Hattie is class ballad from The Master’s early pen…I love your description of the effect..gets me that way too
Watching ye work up there is a lesson I tell ye. Aul Springsteen hasn’t a patch on ye. I met him twice, seemed sound enough. How ye keep everyone out, but in, is pretty unique. There’s great wisdom within in your form of communication, ye bash down all barriers, even your own. I have me eye off the ball a little at the min in terms of the music, but will be back on it soon enough I’m sure. I was over in the Burren last week, saw all the old posters of Lisdon along the way. I picked up a Claddagh in Galway and got engaged to my Tennessee girlfriend down at White Rock on Killiney Bay. She’s a direct descendent of Robert E Lee, as ye know, his fathers founded the state of TN. But she’s more working class than I, and a far better human than most of us. So there’ll be no concessions ; ) Sometimes I feel like I live in a romantic alternative dimension in some ways. But it’s of no significance to the ‘real world’. One thing I do know is that I need to work a hell of a lot harder. I don’t think I’ve anywhere near chiseled enough into the area of potential song and I’m in no way a spring chicken, pretty jaded too… I always have zero control over my voice. It’s all go or no go. I’m way behind. You’re a true gent Christy. Can’t thank ye enough. I’ve enormous respect for a master of song like yourself. A personal motto, “seek not to follow in the footsteps of men of old, seek what they sought.” Head high and heart good.

good luck in all you do you sound Linnet…when you have your various bits and pieces organized and your nest built, get back to the music, you have a good soundin vibe goin on
Hi Christy, Glad to see Killarney went well.
I just got a copy of the CD of Paddy on the road, I’d say there isn’t a hope of getting a vinyl copy at this stage. Still, beggars can’r be choosers. Well worth the listen.

this time 46 years ago I was making that album…I knew nothing of the recording process, I was totally out of my depth but having a great time…Dominic Behan was in the Captain’s chair, Steve Benbow was calling the shots, ( Vodka), the band were old hands on deck and I a cabin boy on his maiden voyage…Heave! Ho!
Had the pleasure of attending my first concert of your good self’s in the Gleneagles Saturday night. Not too bad an oul location for the concert to be honest but it’s high time ya ventured into those hills overlooking Kildare and played us an oul tune up in Wicklow. The ewes have all yeaned now so there’s plenty of fine big sheds for a session and a puck of a ball in the haggard field beforehand. The standard of hurling in between the boxing is surprisingly not too bad in Wicklow but the singing is lacking a little so come up for a visit whenever you feel inclined. Great show and I’ll be hoping to make it to another in the near future

Greetings from Finland! Me and my aunt have became huge fans of Ireland (and irish music) and are coming there again to our third trip (within one year!) next week. We will spend half of our week in Doolin, and noticed some days ago that you are going to perform near to Doolin, in Loughrea and complained that it is too far away for us and thought that nooo there isn’t any way we could… Then we noticed that your next gig on April 30th is even nearer, in Spanish Point and decided to go for it! Now we have tickets and are looking forward very eagerly to see – and hear you singing!. So if you notice in Hotel Armada two silly Finns yelling in the audience – that’s just us 🙂
