great to hear from Scariff…first time I walked the street was over 50 years ago when I attended a great Fleadh Ceoil with a platoon of Balladeers from the Boglands of Kildare. Ten years later we crossed over at Killaloe and flew through Ogonnolloe, Planxty making our way to The Merriman Tavern where we played the first of many gigs. What a great venue that was. Aiden and Síle O’Beirne ran the best gig in the country back in those hairy days.In Scariff I heard Paddy Canny, Martin Rochford, Vincent Griffin, played alongside a (very) young Martin Hayes and his late Father. Dr Bill Loughnane played with Planxty another night. The lock-ins afterwards were legendary. The gigs used be on Saturday nights but the cooling-off period often lasted til Monday morning. After Planxty I played their thru the 70s with different line-ups. Also travelled there to hear The Bothy Band,Clannad,Stocktons Wing (the original line-up). We cooled out bothered heads below in The Lake, played handball in Ogonolloe, slipped over to Johnny Moloneys for quiet moments of reflection….your note brought back many memories…dont know whether you are the scientist or the builder I spoke to last night, good luck for the future, ye will both be kept busy

Did Babs ever find his boots? ..he was a real sharp shooter…remember him playing for Munster in both Football and Hurling (the same afternoon) in The Railway Cup Finals. Saw him play a blinder for Ardfinnan against Commercials in 1964..he threw the boots off after 10 minutes and him as brown as a berry…he was like a hare at the coursing that never got turned nor caught

Well Christy, seeing as it appears that your itinerary is not going to stretch to Tyneside/Wearside this year, I have bitten the bullet and bought two tickets to see you at St. Davids Hall, Cardiff on the 16th May….thats a 580 mile round trip! Couldn’t go two years without seeing you and Declan again (Last time was Newcastle Tyne Theatre in Oct 2013….magical gig that was)……..any chance of singing a song for my lady Louise…..any song you like…..I understand if you can’t….but hey, no harm in asking is there?…..roll on the 16th May…..Steven

Janie..seems like you are going to be here during our holiday time.There is a (very) slight chance of a gig towards the end of your stay here…keep an eye on gig page…..I abandoned air travel about 20 years ago and have not been up to Australia since…I have great memories of touring there, Warnambul, Woolongong and Wooloomaloo, to name but a few..hope you have some good dreamtime on your Irish walkabout
Frequented the folk clubs all over the UK in the 60s & 70s but sadly our paths never crossed. Discovered the voice and the songs during a cruise around Cork and Kerry in 2000 and have been a huge fan ever since. Have been to concerts in Castlebar Liverpool & Coventry and look forward immensely to a trip across the Irish Sea for the Carrickmacross gig on April 4th. My sister Julie Dobey celebrates her 70th birthday that weekend. I know you receive many requests that are impossible to fulfil but a wee mention would be just great

Ah, Christy. Good to hear and read about the recent gigs. It’s the next best thing to a return visit, but a distant second. I hope I am able to rectify that soon as it’s been almost six years since we gathered in Lisdoonvarna. I hosted a two-hour radio show Sunday called ‘Having Left The Path Of Others: A Meditation on Irish Music”. It’s caught in the top two files at the link below, the first hour being the second file, the top file being the closing hour. I aimed to get lost in the spell of the good deep music, and I succeeded. Wishing you good health and robust spirit in the days ahead. Doug, hard to believe that 6 years have elapsed since our last gathering…yet Spring has arrived once again with all the hope and promise that comes with new growth…we are all good here this March Morning, Thanks Be…Declan and I have become a 3 piece with the addition of Jim Higgins on percussion….some nights we swell to a 4 piece when we are joined by Vickie Keating on Vocals…. I’m also doing some gigs with Trad Outfit (Mairtín O’Connor,Cathal Hayden, Sheamie O’Dowd and Jim Higgins)…its been 10 years now since I last played with Planxty so its a great buzz to sit amongst the Music again….Declan has finished his second solo album due for release in the coming months…I’m also doing occasional solo gigs, one this coming saturday in Tipperary Town…this allows me to shoot off in any direction and pick songs seldom performed…I’m hopin to do a series of solo gigs come September…gonna give you a call soon for a catch up….Thanks for the broadcasts…gonna listen later tonight

Hi Ed…the Athlone gathering was wonderful, the listeners raised us right up…met some family too…nephews, cousins, Young Hannon from Páirc Mhuire crossed the Bog once again….unfortunately did not get time to do my walkaround…I usually take a ramble around the “towns” of Athlone wondering where did my Grandfather grow up

If you could add Cliffs of Dooneen to your play list that would be wonderful.

It’s been some time since I posted a comment but I follow the site with great interest. It’s good to hear that you are playing a gig in Tipp town. Hope it goes well. Unfortunately I’m not back in Bansha around that time.
However myself and my two girls and Sister are coming to Cardiff to see you and Declan in May. I know it’s a long shot but is there any chance you might be able to sing So do I for my Daughter Rosie. It’s her favourite Christy song. She is 21in April and it would really make her night. I know you get loads of these but hey, no harm in asking.
Ruby did us proud at Cheltenham. He had them lepping the jumps like ballet dancers. Pity I’m not a gambling man, I might have made my fortune.

I rented a DVD called Greatest Irish Artists from 1997. and you were singing and playing the guitar. I had never heard you sing or play before. but I thought you were fantastic. you are truly one of the greatest Irish artists ever. since I was very young I wanted to be able to sing and play the guitar like you. sadly I can’t sing. I wish I would have gotten to hear you sing long before this. now I’m going to listen to the rest of your music.

Michael (not the farmer) has been in Cheltenham all week losing his shirt to the Mullins the McCoys and the Walshes. Not for me the highs and mostly lows of the gee gees. I love colour of it all, the banter, the excitement,the silks, the saddles, trainers tippin their hats to rich auld ones, the sharks and tipsters, the bookies and their clerks tottin the tallys, the PR dicks tryin to get their clients into shots. the lads who loiter behind the interviews as mothers ring them to tell them they’re on the box…(move to the left ye feckin dope), Tracy Piggott and Claire Baldwin, Mick Fitzgerald and Ted Walsh dispensing vital statistics…..I find it all more enjoyable since I started givin them Bookies a wide berth…. Paddy Power, BetFair, Boyle Sports and all the other sharp dealers in debt and destruction….used to love The Curragh,Naas,Punchestown as a gasún..then farther afield to Gowran Park, Powerstown, Limerick Junction, Navan, Baldoyle and the Phoenix Park.My best winners were Vic Rose at 33/1 on The Curragh circa 1960..Mr What in the Grand National at 18/1…was in Goodwood once, Summertime and my old neighbour Darky Prendergast had a double…I was celebratin on the rum and black when I got a smack in Esher on the way home…I was still seeing stars when the bus pulled into Southall

We are launching a new project Youth:Elect, which will empower marginalised young people under 30 to stand for the Dail elections next year in order to transform the political landscape in Ireland. We have the support of all of the political parties in Ireland and are also reserving seats for independents.
